Unknown reasoning for "Error: Cannot Wipe free space for UNC drive"

Hello all, new member here. I have came across this forum many times in the past years when searching, and have found it to be very beneficial. So, I figured I would see if anyone here may know why this is happening.

First off, the information about the Laptop in question;
-Asus K60IJ
-Windows 7 Ultimate, 64-bit
-Intel Pentium @2.20 GHZ
-4GB DDR 2 Ram
-500GB Seagate Hard Drive

As a part of regular maintenance, I use Glary Utilities and CCleaner to keep the PC clean. In an effort to protect deleted data, I run the "drive wiper"/"wipe free space" function of these programs every so often. I have never had a problem with carrying out these actions until the other day. CCleaner acts like it does something, but having done this before, I know that it's not a few minute operation. Glary Utilities gives a more reasonable response when trying;

"Error: Cannot Wipe free space for UNC drive"

I don't know much about UNC or why my C:\ Drive would be categorized as this. I am on a home WiFi connection, however I haven't every had this connected as a network computer, and also have all of the network/sharing options disabled. I have not made any recent changes that I can recall which may have caused this.

Does anyone have any ideas as to why this may be happening, or better yet, how I can revert back to where I am able to use this feature of the programs?

All input and suggestions are welcome, I appreciate it very much!
Thank you

Hi redhatman, welcome to 7F! :)

Sounds like something happened when CCleaner (CC) attempted to wipe the free space, Glary picked up on those changes, and it ended up being a UNC drive, and it (Glary) couldn't determine the original working directory to start itself.

  • Did CC show the "Cannot Wipe free space for UNC drive" error?

  • Had you made any changes to the file system between the time you last ran CC?

What to try:

  • If you made a restore point try it or the closest one to before the time/date of this wipe.

  • As a last resort try backup images or clones if you have them.

If any of these steps resolves your problem you should run a CHKDSK, and SFC /scannow.

By the way, thank you for filling out your System Specs; If you add the model number (K60IJ) of your laptop to your System Specs you won't have to list it or the rest of them in any of your subsequent posts.
