Hi people,

I was wondering if any of you know of a program that takes away the locked hardrive feature away from the drive. They have a proggie for 32bit but not 64bit. Any ideas, I'm sure that the manufactuer thinks it's a great idea, which may be true for some but imo it causes me problems, I like to have full control of what I bought..:)

Um, what "locked hard-drive feature"? Built into win 7? Or third party?

In bios the hardrive is locked meaning that you can't get into the sensitive areas of the drive boot code ect. Some manufactures do it through bios or others lock the drive before it is installed into any system, the drive itself. This has been the case for a few years now, I never had problems with boot time defrags until I winded up with a hard drive that has been locked in this manner so you can't do that. It's basically a hard drive password and this program is one that would work but as you read on the site it only works for 32 bit computer software, I need 64....

Contact the manufacturer of the HDD/laptop? I am sure they will help you, once they explain you may be voiding some warranty.

The drive shouldn't have a password unless you set one. I've never encountered a computer with a locked hard drive from the manufacturer, though I won't say it doesn't happen.

Is this your laptop, or a laptop assigned to you ??

I had this problem with a Compaq V5000 laptop IDE HD. It was locked with a password when I tried to move it to another laptop that was the exact same model. Never did get it unlocked, it's in my parts drawer.

@Nemix77 & @ DocBrown that is what I'm exactly talking about, that hidden partition though was removed long ago, but as I have been messing around with my wife's laptop which in the bios it says the drive is (frozen), but with cmos wiping software I was able to unlock the drive. When you prepare the drive though and reboot it changes back to frozen. I don't know the exact answer why but one reason is the software that is installed on the hard drive by absolute software which is basically a low-jack component on laptops and commercial built computers. This software is located in the master boot record itself and cannot be removed this is the component I don't like about laptops and store bought machines, I only will build computers from components myself so I don't have that problem. That's why I want the hard drive unfrozen so I can remove this low-jack component. I don't need it and don't want it, it is just another way to intrude on privacy. On you laptop type "msconfig" in the run menu and select the services tab and hide all "microsoft services" by checking the box. If you have "Absolute Software" installed then you can be located anywhere just because of that, and I don't really need to be found.:D Anyway if your laptop gets stolen "so what" by the time they find it for you it will be most likely unusable to you anyhow.;) I just believe it's the path of losing more of our freedoms and being watch over by Big Brother who isn't a brother at all...

Usually a re-installation of the OS will get rid of it after deleting the partition(s).

No a locked harddrive in my particular case here is definitely bios related and the harddrive has a place on it like as I would say "meta-data" unremovable no matter what. You can unlock it momentarily though but killing cmos and rebooting immediately after that, then you boot immediately to a wiping program of your taste, I prefer acronis disk director. I wipe the entire drive from the mbr not just the partition..Then after Windows 7 creates a new raw partition it is then locked once again.

@SIW2 I just use Hirens boot cd from dos programs and use the cmos tools in there. There are quite a few of them to choose from.

I wouldn't rule that out something keeps doing it and that would make sense.
