Everything was working properly on my Win 7 machine until I installed the driver for an HL 2070 Brother laser printer. Then . . .

I ran FreeCell and a dialog box appeared over the game. I tried to snip it but as soon as I press the Snipping Tool icon the dialog box disappears. I also cannot capture it with Print Screen. It vanishes when I press Print Screen. The dialog box interferes with playing the game. The dialog box is game appropriate, is eight lines tall, and says New Game/Select Game/Undo/Hint/Options/Change card deck/change background/exit.

When I go to Spider Solitaire I also get a game appropriate dialog box, not wanted, not asked for.

I scanned the machine with Security Essentials which found no infection.

The speaker volume was too loud, so I clicked on the volume control. The control stays up about 1½ seconds, then vanishes.

MSWord functions normally.

Outlook, when clicking for creating a new message, brings down a dialog box, not the usual thing.

I find that if I press the Alt key the dialog box goes away.

I have uninstalled the Brother driver, shut down, and rebooted with the same actions continuing.

I’m puzzled. I have never seen this before. Any ideas?

Can you run sfc /scannow followed by a full system scan with superantispyware?

Isn't Security Essentials a better virus scan program?

How do I run sfc /scannow? There is no "Run" icon in Win 7.

Also, thanks to you I discovered, when I attempted to type sfc that another unwanted dialog box appears when I try to type in the box and I can't enter anything.

How's that for an error?

SAS is a dedicated malware scanner, and security essentials is too simplistic. Open up the start menu and type cmd, then right click and select run as administrator or press Ctrl+Shift+Enter at once.

I must disagree. Security Essentials does a great job...simplistic is a GOOD thing.

Malwarebytes.org

Download the anti-malware tool, make sure it updates itself and do the quick scan. If there's anything on your system, it WILL find it.

Problem solved!

Problem solved!

My setup has something to do with the solution. I use KVM cables to connect my two computers to the one monitor, but the newer computer and monitor have an advanced video card and a fancy way to make them all work is to use two keyboards and two mouse.

OK, the unused mouse I had set out of the way on my unused keyboard. I noticed it blinking about every two seconds, but so what. I used my computer but it behaved badly as described below.

Tonight I decided I was annoyed with the blinking, so I set the mouse off to one side in a dark corner, then went to play Free Cell. Surprisingly, no unwanted dialog boxes popped up. And, checking further, the other odd events no longer occurred. And, checking the unused mouse, it was no longer blinking.

So, if you ever get strange behavior like I did, check to see if there is an extra mouse that isn’t content with where it sits.
