My laptop has developed an unstable OS I think. My Mcafee screen is black when pulled up, Mcafee indicates my system will not permit them to repair it. My tool bars are fragmented an missing at the top of my Excel, this also prevents me from printing since I can't see the commands. My gadgets won't update. The computer is slow to start. I many have to take it to Geek Squad but it will be 2 weeks till they can get me in. I have tried restoring my computer to an earlier date when things were ok but it doesn't fix many of the problems. Has anyone experienced this type of mess? I would appreciate help.

McAfee is known to cause problems (particularly BSODs) and is a very ineffective AV program, please install and run full scans with these free alternatives which work best with the operating system, due to their lightweight nature on system resources and compatibility:

McAfee Removal Tool - How to uninstall or reinstall supported McAfee products using the Consumer Products Removal tool (MCPR)

Install and perform full scans with:

Remember to install the free version of Malwarebytes not the free trail; untick the free trial box during installation. MSE is the most lightweight and compatible with the Windows 7 operating system

You can also view this thread for a complete free and lightweight security protection combination:
Although, you haven't exactly had a BSOD, the files gathered will be useful for troubleshooting purposes - http://www.sevenforums.com/bsod-help-support/96879-blue-screen-death-bsod-posting-instructions.html

As addition to BlueRobot his advice, you might also want to preform a scan with ESET Online Scanner.

  1. Using Internet Explorer go to this site; ESET Online Scanner.
  2. Click on Run ESET Online Scanner at the left side of the screen.
  3. Allow ESET to install the addon.
  4. Click on Advanced Settings and make sure that the first three boxes are checked.
  5. Click on
    UAC-Shield-Icon.png
    Start.
    info.png
The scan will take a while to complete, be patient.
  6. If there were threads found, please go to the Scan Results window, and do the following;
    • Click on List of Threads Found and then click on Export to text file.
    • Save the .txt file to your desktop and name it something like ESET threads.
  7. Click on Back.
  8. Click on Finish and close the ESET window.

If there were threads found, please include the .txt file in your next post, either as attachment or paste the text between

tags.

Good luck and keep us posted,
Nommy

Hi there
Just ditch MacAfee -- we all call it Mac Aweful. Honestly even on W7 which doesn't have a built in AV program like W8 there are about 9 zillion better choices -- MSE works just fine and is free.

Always I suggest split your OS /and pgms away from your DATA -- run in a separate partition so you can backup and restore regularly -- use a commercial product like Acronis or a free program like Free macrium to create backup images of your OS so you can always restore (without losing your DATA) if things go wrong.

Cheers

I recommend using VIPRERescue as a free alternitive(only as a ful scann tho, not to replace any antivirus) set up the install, run it and sit back, it'll take awhile.
