Unusual computer behavior?

If I launch MS Excel from the start menu, it opens immediately and opening a desktop-based .xlsx file from within Excel also happens immediately. However, if I double click the .xlsx file, it take ten seconds, or so, to open. Why the heck does it take so much longer? Note that I do not have AV on this machine.
