Solved Update error 80073712 / missing XPS manifest files

Hi all,

My ultimate goal is to install the Windows 7 Platform update which right now fails.

SFC /scannow reports corrupt files unable to fix.
WindowsUpdateDiagnostic tool, it reports Update error 80073712 as not fixed.
I also run the system upgrade readiness tool.

The logs indicate a problem with the XPS files (which can't be repaired due to missing manifests). Disabling XPS in 'Turn Windows Feature On/Off' has not helped.

I have attached the CBS and CheckSUR logs. Hoping somebody can help - how do I repair files when I don't have the repair files/manifests??

Hi Uwajimaya,

You will need to run these steps to fix the issue:

1. Close all programs, and then restart your computer.
2. Insert the Windows DVD into the computer's disk drive. Wait for Setup to start. If Setup doesn't start automatically, follow these steps:
   
   1. Click Start, and then type Drive:\setup.exe in the search box, where Drive is the letter of your computer's DVD drive (for example, D:\setup.exe).
   2. In the Programs list, click Setup.exe.
   
   
3. Click Install Now.
4. Click Go online to obtain the latest updates for installation (recommended).
5. If you're asked for it, type the Windows Product key.
6. In the Which kind of installation do you want? window, click Upgrade.
7. When the installation is complete, restart your computer, and then run Windows Update.

Too easy! I did the "upgrade" (although it needs to be run from within Windows, not during boot-up. I then ran Windows Update bunches more times and works now as it should. Phew. Thanks for the help, like I said, that was too easy
