Solved Update KB3102810 - is this one safe? useful?

Hello Updates forum members,

Yesterday I got a notification that the above update, for 64bit systems, labelled optional, is to "resolve issues in Windows," w/o any other info. Does anyone know whether this is safe (i.e. is it Win 10 nagware? Is it MicroSoft spyware? etc?). Has anyone installed it and had it cause problems on their system?

It's not on any of my "bad updates" lists - at least not yet, but I certainly feel better being able to communicate with other alert Win7 users!

Thanks in advance, Patrick

Believe I sent you a list of telemetry KB's and batch file to remove them. Those are the only temetry KB's that I know of.

According to M$ on Kb3102810

Issues that are fixed in this update

Issue 1

When you install updates by using System Center Configuration Manager, the installation takes a long time, and System Center Configuration Manager becomes overloaded.Issue 2

The Svchost.exe process occupies 100 percent of CPU usage when you upgrade a Windows Update client to Windows 10.

Being an Optional update, if your paranoid about spyware, hide the update until more info is available.

If I didn't sent you the list I have, and the Batch file to remove them here you go:

Thank you wben 353. Yes, you'd sent me a list of the MicroSoft spyware updates.

As always, I appreciate your help.

No problem. Glad to help where I can, and the list is growing every day, little by little. I'm retired with a lot of time on my hands & really enjoy helping others (or in some cases, giving it the old college try) ;)

Wben353 is it fine for anyone else on Win7 to also run the above batch file if we want to get rid of the spyware and don't want to be "invited" to Win10? Thanx

Yes,

All the KB's are optional, however, some are reporting that KB3035583 is now showing as "Important"

They will reappear with next check for updates, you can research each one, decide if you want/need it, if you don't, right-click update, choose> hide update.

If you wish to inspect the batch file code right-click choose> edit, If you wish to add entries copy a line and insert KB #. Watch you don't remove the ":" between KB and number KB:3035583

Win10 update nagware is KB3035583

If you want to uninstall just that update, click start orb, type cmd, right-click cmd.exe choose>run as administrator, copy & paste:

wusa /uninstall /KB:3035583 /quiet /norestart

You could also delete all but one entry in the batch file, add the KB #, save, close & run it.

Congratulations, you have just created your first batch file. By the way, in notepad, if you choose Save as file type, choose>all, & change suffix .txt to .bat that creates the batch file and the icon will change accordingly. Similarly .vbs changes text file to Visual Basic script for .net, usually microsoft Net framework is already installed & updated on your machine if you install important updates.

Just wanted to "Thank" wben353 for the information on M$ KB's that contained "data miners", I thought I had been vigilant and NOT installed any bogus M$ updates but when I went through your list I found 7 I had missed, they are now gone -

Thanks again and hope you will keep all of us updated on any more

3 are definitely telemetry, they others questionable, all optional.

I try to keep up on the spyware, of which, I'm not a fan.

Not saying it does.
It's been identified as Questionable on several sites, since Microsoft hasn't clearly defined what it is.
It is optional as well as the others. When it doubt leave it out. Till I get more info on it I'm hiding update.

KB3102810 according to Microsoft is supposed to fix slow Windows Updates & high CPU usage.

If I come across more detailed info on any of the KB's listed I'll post it.

I don't want to start anything here, but it seemed to me that is what you were saying.
"a list of telemetry KB's...Those are the only temetry KB's that I know of."

Microsoft hasn't clearly defined what it is.
Granted, MS obfuscates many of their patches, but 2970228 seemed pretty straight forward: new currency symbol for the Russian ruble. Did you, or someone else, scan the KB and find code for telemetry? That would be frightening if you did.

Here's some addition information which may answer your questions. Personally, I have hidden all the Questionable updates, (they're optional at this time)

There are currently 4 that are Definitely telemetry.

KB3022345 Update for customer experience and diagnostic telemetry
KB3068708 (replaces KB3022345) Update for customer experience and diagnostic telemetry
KB3075249 Update that adds telemetry points to consent.exe in Windows 8.1 and Windows 7
KB3080149 Update for customer experience and diagnostic telemetry

Just to name a few sites on issue.

Google it & see what you find.

Please post back your results/opinions.

Some of Microsoft's preinstalled not KB programs are reported to track you too.

See Super User

Hope this helps.

KB2970228 has nothing to do with Windows 10. If you look at the files included in that update it includes no 10/telemetry files. Just more paranoia surrounding irrelevant updates.

KB3102810 is yet another update to the Windows update client and yes this can download the windows 10 installer if you have your updates set to Automatic.
Set it to "check for updates but let me choose" and also untick the box "Give me recommended updates the same way I receive important".

These are all the 10/telemetry updates so far (not including the one mentioned above):

I see nothing to indicate that KB2970228 is tracking related. It probably made some list because early versions of the patch caused problems. There have been 7 versions of KB2970228. The latest version is stable.

While I like to make my own decisions on which patches I may not need/want (with the help of Susan Bradley's Patch Watch column over on Windows Secrets), I do like to check other people's lists in case I installed one that was more than I bargained for. The best list I've found so far is in this post.

Btw, it may soon get harder to accomplish what we're trying to do here. There's more info in the first section of
this article.

It won't get anymore difficult for you if you untick the box "Give me recommended updates the same way I receive important". Although it will become more difficult for users who have them set to Automatic. Not sure why anyone would want it set like that. I haven't done that since XP.
MS track record of pushing out the occasional buggy update has been getting a little worse over the past year. I always wait a week to see if there is any bad feedback about them.

I really don't understand the article in the first link. It states updates to uninstall for 10/telemetry yet includes others that have nothing to do with those?
People need to be careful with some of these articles as soon they'll be telling people not to install security updates. Some articles are useful, some just seem outright paranoid :D

But anyway, the one that's in question is best to avoid if you don't want 10.
