Update KB3107998 - is this one safe? useful?

Hello,

I first saw this one last week, along with 8 security updates. Has anyone determined whether this one is safe or (or even useful). I've become more and more reluctant to update just because MicroSoft says to do so.

Hi:

According to the MS KB article, it really only affects Lenovo systems, to remove an outdated Lenovo bloatware app (USB Blocker) that conflicted with a MS security patch from October (Lenovo has an updated version available of the program in question).

So while I would never say that any MS patch these days is "harmless", it appears to be OK?

Having said that, I have held off for both this and 3097877 for a few more days, just in case.
Will probably take the plunge today, even though neither of my systems is a Lenovo.

That thread is 21 pages long and drifts too far off-topic for me.

I'm not surprised that the patch might do more than MS says it does.
But it's certainly confusing that the KB topic only addresses the Lenovo fix.
And it's not a security patch.

So, I will see....

Black Tuesday has certainly become a monthly adventure.

I have KB3107998 on both my Asus systems and have seen no problems and it's been a few days.

I did take the plunge on both systems (after separately installing 3097877).
It did take a while to install/configure and required a reboot.

So, I guess you were right, as expected: 3107998 likely does "more" than just fix a problem with Lenovo USB Remover. Not surprised that MS was less than forthcoming, as usual.

Shocking, I say, shocking.
<rolls eyes>

Sad that we have to now fear the Patches more than the security vulnerabilities they are supposed to fix.
MS has become a bit of a slow-motion, multi-vehicle, car-meets-train WRECK.
Sigh.

Remember the good old days before WW-10, July 29-2015 release.
You got your updated to Windows 7 and trusted them.
Seldom did I get a faulty update and if I did it was take care of by Microsoft very quickly.
Remember when you didn't have to do many searches online to gather information on all the updates before installing them.
Think now, way back before July 2015.
Aaaah, the good old days.
