Update keeps installing the same 2 updates on shutdown

Every time I shut down, Windows Update installs the same 2 updates. It never gives an error message saying that the install failed... it just insists on doing it again. This is the update from last week, I guess. I'm afraid I'm at work and away from the affected computer.

It's not critical, it's just annoying, bc shutdown now takes too long.

I'm betting it's an easy enough fix, but I don't know 7 well enough to start guessing.

Help?

Welcome to SF!

Look in your Update history to see if the updates are actually installed. If they are, you can right-click on the updates that say they need to be installed, and select Hide.

Ok, it says they've failed every time. I tried a manual install and got "Windows Update encountered an unknown error" Code 646. The troubleshooter doesn't seem to help any.

Just hide them then. and hopefully the next updates will work better.

You can try a couple of things:

1) Disable your firewall, then try updating.

2) Disable UAC, then try updating.

3) You said you downloaded the updates manually. Instead of running them by just double clicking them, Right click and choose Run as Administrator.

Also you could go to this site and down load the updates (just enter the KB number in search).
Then install them locally after they download.

It could be that corrupted versions of those updates are fooling Windows Update into thinking you don't have them, but, at the same time, are preventing them from installing. I know that sounds like a contradiction, but it really can happen.

To confirm that this is the case, go to your control panel and see if the failing updates are listed there. If so, uninstall those updates and run Windows Update again. Now that nothing is in the way, the updates should be successful.

Of course, there are a number of reasons for your problem. This is only one scenario with one solution. Good luck.
