I have two updates which are being installed every day, and more than once a day. They are: KB977165 and KB981852.

My update history says they have been installed 3 times successfully, but still they come back for more.

Can anyone give me any clues as to what is going on? Never seen this behaviour before.

I have two updates which are being installed every day, and more than once a day. They are: KB977165 and KB981852.

Go to Programs and Features>>View installed updates

if you have these two ones listed then uninstall them and reinstall updates,if you don't have them then install these updates, restart computer and when BIOS screen disappear press F8 to boot into safe mode to finish installation.

If it doesn't work, try reset system transaction logs http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/107982-clfs-transaction-logs-reset.html?filter[2]=General%20Tips

Many thanks to you all for coming back so quickly.

I have reset MS Update and run Update again - needless to say those same two updates have shown. I have installed them for the moment and will see how it goes tomorrow.

MS Update itself seems to be taking much longer than it did before all this started - I don't know if that is significant or not.

Will post tomorrow.

Smells like there is a problem with your updater. Maybe the sfc /scannow command can fix it.

I reset the transaction logs, and that seems to have fixed the problem. Another security update came down, and installed without any problems.

Many thanks for the advice.

Unfortunately, the update I installed this morning has come back for a second try, so all is not quite sweetness and light.

I tried sfc/scannow, but the process will not start because "windows resource protection could not perform this task".

Does this all mean that I have some corruption in my system?

Should I consider a system restore?

This does not sound too good. There are at least some system files that are corrupted. If you have the option to restore from a restore point or an image, I would try that. I would, however, first make an image of the current system in case you lose files that you have created after your restore point time. Then you can always retrieve them. The easiest for imaging would be this: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/73828-imaging-free-macrium.html?ltr=I

I back up every day with Norton Ghost 15 to another hard drive, so I could go back a week say, if that is appropriate.

Ghost is good. I use Ghost14 on my Vista systems. You have to go back to the point where the problem did not occur. Whether that is a week or more we cannot say.

Have just gone back 5 days, restored my email etc, and now sfc /scannow works with no problems.

Ran MSUpdate and 3 updates came down, and installed without any problems. Update is working fast now, so that is a relief!

I cannot understand what happened, but will settle for the situation now.

Phew! (for the moment)

This is probably my last post on this subject - my system is still solid this morning, and an update check took about 10 seconds.

Many thanks to everyone who pointed me in the correct direction for a solution - much appreciated, and I have learned quite a bit.

Hi bellandbottle,
I came upon this thread because I have exact same issue with the exact same 2 updates.
The WU reset batch file did not work either for me and I am going to try the sfc scan next. I am saving Restore only as a very last resort.

Thank you for starting an interesting thread.

Craig, AMTELCO

Thanks for the feedback - much appreciated!

When I analysed it all later, I am certain that the updates I downloaded on that day corrupted my system. I did some digging around the various posts here, and it is clear that quite a few people do the large updates one at a time - I do that myself now.

I think the only thing to do is to do a repair of some kind, and it was just easier for me to go back to when my system was solid. I use Thunderbird, so Mozbackup allowed me to save and restore my mails up to date.

Best of luck,
Ian
