I have the same laptop, except mine is 4GB Ram, Windows 7 x64 Ultimate installed and the same graphic card. I noticed you didn't mention any kind of problems with nVidia drivers. I had to install old Vista drivers on mine, as with the latest nVidia drivers my screen would flicker with a little noise.
So is your graphic working fine? If it is, what kind of drivers are you using?
If you didn't install them yet and using the standard vga ones, then now you know you have to use nVidia drivers for Vista (if the latest won't work)

i installed the newest drivers of the nvidia page m8, worked perfect for me.
and yeah ill post back if i find something for a volume bar, i take it its a common problem and not specificly related to my laptop / drivers seeing as you have it aswell.

cant get the green bars back, but this programm gives some alternatives.
havnt found any skins for it but im sure there is one that emulates the old green bars, but im quite happy with the options offered
