Hiya
I have windows 7 home premium. Unsure if it OEM or the retail version.
I want to upgrade it to windows 7 professional retail version.
The anytime upgrade does not work.
How do I do this so its genuine software?

just to be clear.
I AM NOT LOOKING TO UPGRADE TO WINDOWS 10

Anytime Upgrade has been history for a long time.

Why do you want to upgrade to Windows Pro retail when oem is the same thing ?

What do you need in Pro ? Do you plan to add more memory ?

You will not find Retail anywhere, and you don`t need it, oem is the same exact thing, the only difference with retail is that you get 365 days of support from Microsoft, and you don`t need that.

Microsoft Windows 7 Professional SP1 64-bit - Operating Systems - Newegg.com

Right here in Computer Properties it tells you if it`s it`s oem or not.

If you didn`t install it then it`s most likely oem.

Thanks for reply

I want an OS I can install on an upgraded computer without any issues. (new motherboard, cpu, memory).
When it comes to OEM, its a bit odd. I have read conflicting answers as to using OEM licences with a new motherboard.

If doable, take the windows 7 licence I have to upgraded computer, using it for everything except gaming on an encrypted drive. Purchase Windows 10 retail & install for gaming only. Have a dual boot system. It is unclear how long directx12 will take to be the norm for games, which is windows 10 only.

If not have a dual linux/windows 10 boot with the linux drive encrypted for privacy obviously.

I am limited to 16 GB at the moment but not a problem right now. Also would like to use windows 7 professionla for software raid for performance gains. My motherboard is limited in that way. Its the Z77 chipset, with only 2 sata III ports that can be used in raid 0.

Cheers

There is no issue using an oem license on new equipment.

Of course you can`t use the same oem license again on new equipment, but you certainly don`t need retail.

If you build a new machine you can certainly install oem on it no problem at all.

If you want Pro then buy Pro oem, you do not need retail and you will never find retail anywhere.

Just use the link I provided if you want to purchase Windows 7 Pro 64 bit for a new build.

You DO NOT need retail.

You also DO NOT need Raid, install windows on a solid state drive, keep all your data on your other drives.

Since SSD`s have become so cheap, there is no reason whatsoever to use Raid for speed benefits, it will never touch an ssd, and software Raid is just a crazy idea anyway.

"If doable, take the windows 7 licence I have to upgraded computer"

No you can`t do that, it breaks the EULAgreement, but no one says you can`t try.

An oem license lives and dies with the original motherboard it was installed on.

You build a new PC and of course you will be buying windows for it, but you do not need retail.

Hi
Just trying to find out my options.
As for RAID, I do not need it, but it is useful.
I have my games on a 1 TB drive and the OS on a 60GB SSD.
I have a RAID 0 or two 60 GB SSDs using it as a cache for the game game drive. It speeds things up a lot. If the RAID array fails, will not lose data. I could maybe get two 512GB SSDs if worth it. I was hoping to get windows 7 retail as to install on the next PC upgrade and use software RAID to create a bigger & faster cache. Still figuring out what is optimum for the best price for performance.

When directx 12 is necessary for most games, maybe windows 10 retail & free linux will be optimum for the price.

I have all my games installed from C (the Samsung 850 Pro 256 GB) onto a spinner, there are no performance issues at all.

Arkham Knight, Metro, Battlefield and Rainbow 6 Siege all play flawlessly :D

As Mentioned, Windows 7 upgrade isn't working anymore as MS isn't selling it no more.
Do you have a valid Windows 7 pro key?
If you do, go to MS site and download the iso file: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows7
Burn it to a DVD or make a USB drive (4G minimum) bootable using Windows7-USB-DVD- Installer or Rufus with the Windows 7 Pro iso file.
From inside your actual windows 7, with Explorer find your DVD or USB drive with the Windows 7 Pro. Run Setup.exe

Sounds good Megahertz07, but where does ianmozzy get the proper COA key for Windows 7 Pro proper activation?

The only way I know how to get the proper COA key is to buy Windows 7 Pro which will come with a DVD from Microsoft and a proper COA key to activate it with.

As said, MS isn't selling Win7 anymore. Many sites, like Amazon and Microcenter sells the MS Win 7 DVD or only the key. Just beware not to buy a Pirate key.

As far as I know one can not legally but a COA key by itself. It must come with the media.

This is old but as far as I know it still holds true.

Can buy Windows key without media.

Seems good... Thanks!

There are NO legal sales of Keys for Windows other than with accompanying software - if you buy from this shop it will almost certainly turn out to be a counterfeit copy. Most such sales will work for a limited period, until the number of activations exceeds the limit, at which time MS will Block the Key from further activations and all current installs will become flagged as non-genuine.
If you've already made a purchase and installed the product I recommend that you visit the Windows 7 Genuine forum and read the Announcements and stickies there - and post an MGADiag report to have the key checked.

I'm quite shure that MS used to sell the key only.
But you still can find official Win 7 pro 64 (most oem) from US$ 100 to 150
