Upgrading to Windows 7. [please read]

All you need to do is install PowerISO and create a virtual drive and then mount the ISO on it, then just go to computer and click on the mounted image and the install will start, you have the option to upgrade or fresh install and I take it that you wanted to upgrade so just choose that option, then just follow any instrutions and you should have no problems.
Hi,

I assume you want to install on the existing Vista partition? If so,you could extract the.iso onto the HD and run setup.exe.

If you want to install to a separate partition ( which I suggest you do ):

first make another partition and format it

then download the free version of PowerIso, mount the 7 iso, run setup from there and select the partition to install to - during the 7 installation procedure.

PowerISO - Create, Edit, Extract, Mount, Compress, Encrypt, Split ISO file, ISO/BIN converter, Virtual Drive, DAA

The free ( unregistered ) version will do what you need.

Just click download on the PowerIso link.

Which guide should I try?

Either way is good but I would suggest as SIW2 said to create a second partition and do a fresh install on that and then you will be able to dual boot with vista. Also this is still only trial software and you will need to do a fresh install of Windows 7 when it hits the shelves if you want to continue using it.

Hi RyeRye, Welcome to SevenForums. There are a lot of experienced people on here. Many are willing to help you. However, if your not familiar with all these terms and products mentioned, it may be more than you want to get in to.

I would suggest you read through Installation & Setup - Windows 7 Forums and especially Tutorials - Windows 7 Forums

Well I backed up my stuff in recovery, but I don't know if I did it all the way because it ran out of space.
RyeRye, the first cardinal rule in PC experimentation is, have a good backup process that also restores properly :). I am going to assume (as should you) that if the backup ran out of space, it's NFG and you'd be SOL if you tried to restore. I would correct this situation before going any further.

Once that's sol-ved do the virtual drive mount thing and either upgrade the current Vista install, or do a clean install which would entail re-installing all your used applications that do not come with the OS. If you can have a second partition, that would be preferable, then you could boot either Vista or Win 7.

A clean install is the safest solution. I have done many upgrades with no problems, but they have been from one Win 7 build to the next, never on an existing Vista installation, so I have no idea how stable that path is.

Having said all that, realize you will have to re-install at some point to the released Windows 7, assuming you buy it, or go back to Vista, so you need to see this as temporary until March 2010 the latest.

DJ

All of my systems still run fastest on XP 32-bit for the most part. Win7 is fun to play with, but I still prefer XP for raw speed, security, and functionality.
