Upgrading Windows 7 RC to Windows 7 Ultimate Retail

Hey Guys

I'm trying to update as shown in the thread title. However, when i click upgrade, setup tells me the following

"You can't upgrade from Win 7 64bit to Win 7 32bit"
"You can't upgrade from Win 7 32bit to Win 7 64 bit"

I have Win 7 x64, and i'm trying to install Win 7 x64. The only thing i have done is change one of the .ini files on the install to allow me to update from the RC version.

Any Ideas?

Which file did you change? where did you get your RTM image?

Boot from your purchased Win 7 DVD and perform a clean install of Win 7

Is this the tutorial you are following? Upgrade the Windows 7 RC to any retail version Icrontic Tech

Many have reported good results using this, but be aware that any in-place Upgrade suffers some level of corruption, and the predictions for RC were that it would be prohibitive.

So even though the reports are good so far, I would use the RC in-place Upgrade workaround only as a temporary solution until you can find time to clean install for the best performance.

@Greg, Yeah i used that, and do only want to do it as a temporary work around as i can't do a clean install.

Any ideas guys?

Are you sure you have the 64 bit version? Where did you get it?

Try downloading and burning it again at 4x speed with Verify using ImgBurn - it never fails.

I used this procedure Upgrade the Windows 7 RC to any retail version
to do an upgrade/downgrade (upgrade RC1 to RTM, downgrade from Ultimate to Home Premium) and it worked perfectly.

If MS integrate 32bit and 64bit disks into one, I think you can do that, but it's not. You need clean install 32 Bit,

Bite the bullet, back up your data then do a Clean Install. You'll probably be happier in the long run with no RC1 residue, though I've not had any problems yet with the one computer I did this with.
