Today I decided to give a try of dual booting windows 7 and windows xp
I've had 7 installed first. When I tried to shrink the windows 7 volume in disk management, I got an error and it could not be done. So I decided to download a third party program called Partition Wizard. I shrank the windows 7 volume down by 10 gigs and Paritition Wizard needed to restart the computer to complete the shrnking. So I let it do it's thing. After partitioning is complete, it automatically restarted the computer again. This time the computer is stuck on the first screen when it boots up.
It has the HP logo and on the bottom left it says press esc for star up menu.
None of the keys work (includes esc and the F keys) except for the ctrl alt del combo
I can't get it past this screen. It won't go to boot management or safe mode page or boot from CD.
I have a windows 7 DVD I am willing to wipe clean and do a reinstall, if needed.

please help

I can't get past the logo screen to do anything.
The option for boot from cd doesn't show up.
(usually it says press any key to boot from cd drive)
also, since the F keys don't work, I can't get into advanced boot option such as system recovery.

Oh also, when I spam the keyboard, the computer will make a loud beep noise on every key pressed.

Would I have to open my laptop? I would prefer not to do that because I've never done or seen it done before.

Yeah I dont think your hardware has come loose.

but you never know. If you want to check...Is the laptop under warrentee still? If so take it to store and have them open it and look. If its under warrentee, sometimes opening it up voids the warrentee.

I think this is either Master Book Record or your File Table. there are people on this forum with great MBR knowledge hopefully one will see the thread and have seen this issue. It is new to me.

can you hook up an external keyboard to the case and see if it will work?

If you dont have one - borrow one? just anything generic the drivers for the keyboard might have been corrupted with the system. maybe hooking up an external one will use the default drivers and work.

Edit:

(Im posting too much)

Another thing to try since this is a laptop. Reset it by powering down completely. disconnect from power adapter and then remove battery from case. press and hold the power button for 30 seconds. This will discharge the electrical circuits clearing the data from them. after that is done, insert battery and power cord and start the system up. This has cleared up issues before for different things and is worth a try.

Hello !!

Maybe the boot order is changed in the BIOS. See whether you are able to go to your BIOS if so change the Boot order to CD ROM then HDD then save and close it. Then see if you can boot from the Disk. If you can then run the Start up Repair. Run it atleast 3 to 4 times. Also see if you can go into the safe mode.

Hope this helps,
Captain

Run HD maker's full diag/repair CD scan: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287

If HD is failing, use Paragon Rescue Disk to copy partition or files off. http://www.paragon-software.com/home/rk-express/

If not or it repairs, Place the Win7 repair Cd in tray, start computer and tap ESC repeatedly every second.

When it brings up the one-time boot menu, have it boot from Repair CD. See if it finds an installation to repair.

If so, click through to Recovery Tools list to run Startup Repair up to 3 separate times with reboots.

If this fails, open Command Line and use DISKPART to make sure it is still marked Active. Type:
DISKPART
LIST DISK
SELECT DISK # (replace # with Win7 HD #)
LIST PARTITION
SELECT PARTITION # (for Win7 Partition #)
ACTIVE
EXIT

Now return to Recov Tools list to Run Startup Repair up to 3 separate times with reboots.

If this fails, use Paragon Rescue Kit to rescue the partition. If this fails, have it copy your data off. http://www.paragon-software.com/home/rk-express/

Then use DISKPART from CD Command line to CLEAN ALL, which will zero the HD and force Win7 DVD to autostart.

Your HD maker's Diag/Repair CD (linked above) will autostart, as will memtest86. Run both.

If hardware checks out, you can also use Partition Wizard bootable CD to autostart, then repartition for your dual boot. Rightclick on Win7 partition to Explore if files are intact. You can then Resize it to make space to install XP.

XP CD will autostart, use it to format its own partition in the space you resized. After install, use EasyBCD 2.0 beta to add Win7 to Dual Boot.

Thx for the replies. I will try the diagnostic tests tmr since I have no access to a cd/DVD burner as of this moment
