Urgent!! Help needed to recover lost data

When you plug the drive in, does Windows make the "dum-dum" sound (new hardware found)?

It takes quite a while before a low doodle-dum sound comes thru, but it was not the same sound as when "new hardware found" sounds! it makes the sound when "unknown device" appears in the device manager, when I unplug it sounds de-dum just like when you unplug other usb!

is this significant?

Your 500 GB external hard drive connects how - usb or firewire?
Connect the drive to any working computer that supports the interface.
For data recovery I have used testdisk it was very effective

The data is important but I backed up more than I realised so I have not lost as much as first thought.

Being a 500GB harddrive almost 3/4 full, even if it were possible, I imagine it would cost a vast amoiunt to try and restore.

Hi Susan,

Did you try removing the drive from the enclosure? There should be a standard 3.5 or 2.5 HDD in there, either IDE or SATA.

I do IT support, just got off the phone with someone with the exact same problem. His fix was to power down the laptop, power down the hard drive. Then plug into a computer that's already on. then, power on the external drive...voila

hope your solution is simple as that.

Maybe we're looking at the problem differently.

You mentioned you have 2 500gb drives. I see that your C is 450 and your D is 465. not including that 500gb external drive, does that mean you have 3 ~500gb drives? or did you partitioned 1TB drive into 2 ~500mb partitions?

did you have the external drive connected when you install 7?

Well the drive can not be read at all.

A. Popper's idea could work. Depending on how it's done. From an External caddy shouldn't pose a problem, never heard of that working. If you plug into a PC as an internal drive while the PC's on, that can work, on occasion, but can also short it out completely.

Data Recovery is going to run you anywhere from 300$ to 2000$ and up, depending on who you send it to and how bad you want it.

I know, That's what data recovery is for. From what she said, windows still can see the drive but tell her to re-format, that means the MBR table somehow got screwed up, with "GetDAtaBack" I am sure you can recover it.
