Hello!

I wish to install a USB 3.0 on my computer which is a HP Workstation XW6200 running Win 7 Pro. The reason for my asking is because I was given from Germany a portable Platinum MyDrive 1 TB hard drive for Xmas. It's a nifty little job but it's USB 3.0. In your opinion, could I easily install a USB 3.0 card on my system? The other option being a powered (the maker is adamant) external usb 2 hub with the limitations it would give?

Thank you very much for your help.

All the best,

Boyard

Welcome to the forums.

As long as you have an open PCI slot it should be o.k. Check your motherboard spec.'s first to make sure it is usb3 capable.

USB 3.0 cards are only available in PCI-e x 1. I have only seen 1 with the older PCI; it was a StarTech & was over $50. Your motherboard has one PCI-e x and one PCI-e x 16 and 4 PCI slots. You can use the X1 card in either one. Expect speeds about 2X that of USB 2.0. USB 3.0 chips on motherboard are quite a bit faster. You also have to provide power to the card with a spare molex from the power supply. Depending on the card & the USB drive you might need a powered USB 3.0 hub.
