Solved USB 3.0 to USB 2.0 internal header adapter

Hi guys,

I built my own pc a few months ago and the case came with a single USB 3 port on the front but the motherboard I chose doesn't have any USB 3 headers. However it does have two USB 2 headers so I was wondering if I could use the adapter I've linked to at the bottom of the post to get the front USB port to work. I know that if it did work that it would operate at the slower USB 2 speed, not USB 3 but as long as I can use the port at all I'll be ok with it. So will it work? Any response will be welcome.

That wouldn't work mate, the 19-pin connector is to connect to a USB 3.0 header on the motherboard which yours doesn't have. If you need extra USB ports you could pick up a USB 3.0 PCI-e card.

Thanks for the reply. I know that I couldn't plug a USB 3 header directly into the USB 2 header, thats why I linked the adapter to changes the 19 pin USB 3 header to a 4 pin USB 2 header.

Haha, when I first read your reply you confused me slightly so that'll explain why. I know that it won't operate at USB 3 speed, but would it be slightly faster than the USB 2 ports on the front I/O?

I doubt it if it's running off a USB 2.0 header, it'll be capped at that point.

Ok, finally got the adapter installed into my system, and happily it worked perfectly first time. The transfer speed is roughly the same as the other USB 2 ports, which was expected but its great to finally have all three USB ports on the front panel finally working. Thanks again for your help

Just as an aside, have you seen these? A PCI-e card that gives you an internal 20-pin USB 3.0 header. You could get your port working as USB 3.0 then.

I've seen similar products to that, but as I'm beginning to consider upgrading my CPU and motherboard in the relatively near future, so that I will have a native USB 3 header, an additional PCI-e slot, as I've only got one x16 and one x4 at the moment. I just wanted the adapter to be able to use the USB port in the mean time. Thanks anyway
