USB - annoying "Device Can Perform Faster" message

Pops up every time I plug in a USB - I've got two different flash drives and an old mp3 player. Message is the same for all devices. Been using 7 RC1 since it came out (flash drives and mp3 player for a lot longer) but this message box is a relatively recent thing. Gives me a list of all my USB ports but I have no clue how to make them faster or how to get rid of this message.

Any advice?

What are your system specs? You should fill your specs in because I think this issue is system specific. I have had a similar popup on a Dell XPS 420 desktop and as I recall it turned out to be the chipset drivers. Once updated, Windows saw the USB devices correctly as hi-speed USB 2.0.

What hardware / motherboard do you have? Go to the Device Manager.

- Expand the heading "Universal Serial Bus controllers" at the bottom.
- You should see a bunch of Generic USB Hub or USB Root Hub entries - ignore those.
- There should be some other chipset related entries, in my case they are named "Intel(R) ICH10 Family USB Enhanced Host Controller - 3A3A", followed by several more with different last 4-character code: 3A3C, 3A34, bla-bla. These are the ones.
- Double-click on an entry to show the properties pop-up.
- Go to the tab "Advanced"
- There you'll see a checkbox at the bottom "Tell me if my device can perform faster"
- Uncheck it
- Do the same for all the other such device entries

Cheers!

Did it happen with an upgrade? or after installing something? Or just suddenly (out of curiosity)

Basically it's telling you that you have plugged a USB device into a port that is slower than the device. I.e. USB 2 device into a USB 1 or 1.1 hub.

So either you have USB 1.1 hubs on your MB OR possibly you do not have W7 (or Vista) compatible motherboard drivers installed and a generic USB 1.1 driver is installed instead.

So either disable the warning as mentioned above or try to locate Vista usb or "motherboard" drivers for your machine and see if those install better USB drivers so you can get 2.0 functionality from your devices.

Also, in addition to what DJG said, DO go to your "USB Root Hub" entries in device manager, right click, Properties, Advanced and see what it says under hub information. It should say "High Speed" for USB 2.0 operation. If it says "Full Speed" then it is either a USB 1.1 hub or is acting like one.

I always wondered about the logic for the two labels. In my head "Full Speed" tends to say you can't get any faster, I mean, that's where "full speed ahead" gets used, right? Whereas "high speed", well, it's good, but it tends to imply there could be "higher speed" which could in turn be "full speed".

So now USB 3 is coming, so what are we gonna have? Full :), High :D & Ludicrous :p speed?? Sheesh!

Edit: To add a bit more, in the USB Root Hub properties Power tab you will see what peripheral is being handled by that hub.

Thanks for the input, guys. Didn't know about the checkbox. I uninstalled every USB driver, rebooted, and they loaded back up fine. No messages now.

Apparently, I have one USB 2.0 hub, and the rest are 1.1s. Is that normal?

I have the same problem

I have had this problem as well
I even went to the extreme & got a new mobo only to find out my new mobo is doing it now as well. My specs are below. I only have USB 2.0 devices but im getting this message, every time i connect a usb hub, I even got a new USB2.0 yesterday and the error still exists. this is one example. from the motherboard rear panel usb to a 2ft usb2.0 extension cable to a 4 port usb2.0 hub from the hub i have 1 wireless 802.11n.
if i plug the wireless in without using the hub i don't get the message. I have 3 USB 2.0 hubs and have this error on each hub, The usb2.0 hubs are all different brands.

same here

I have the same problem only after a format the drivers for the 2.0 usb have not been installed. I had win7 before and I didn't have this problem. I formated my pc yesterday and only after I connected an external HDD it shows me this annoying message which is true. The connection speed are very slow. When I connected a normal usb flash stick it was normal (2.0). any ideas?

The problem with mine was my motherboard, I also replaced my USB hubs with 2.0, even though the hubs that i had previously said they were 2.0 "well they were not 2.0". Mind you the PC upgrade was well worth it!
