USB driver will not install

Zotac BI325 mini pc. W7 64bit. I have a strange one here. I was already in the same situation and some improper driver or something brought it to where I simply could do nothing but another W7 install. The usb port that is on the off side seems to not be able to connect up to anything although it does see a flash drive in dev mgr if you plug one in. (it may have worked fine for the install usb, I forget if I was able to use that). It also will not work if I plug in the same mouse or keyboard I am using in the other ports. The two usb ports on the main connection area are fine for the mouse and keyboard, but they have the same problem if I plug a flash drive in.

I have tried multiple procedures and ideas to install a driver and correct this problem, except for manually installing a driver as I can’t find one (just a flash drive and the other devices have drivers installed already) and I don’t want to do too much experimentation and judging by this issue I think that would fail with the same error. (I can do a restore point if I do any experimentation). When I try to install a driver using dev mgr I get the error of “Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it. / There is no driver selected for the device information set or element.” I kind of question if it is even finding a driver? I have all of the manufacturer drivers in and it leaves me with this.

Could this be some version of the old no usb 3.0 when you install W7 problem? I believe this may have had W8 originally if it came with anything, but the bios does have settings for W8 and W7.The standard intel 3.0 driver also gives the same error. And although the manufacturer intel video driver installed fine, the one that is newer and off the intel site has some kind of error where it cannot install. I have tried troubleshooter, sfc scannow, safe mode, clean boot, took ownership of folders, disabled driver signature, etc. Any ideas of what to do or try? Any way to access more of what the error is? Maybe there is in fact some kind of hardware/motherboard problem with that usb port. I guess if it never works it may not be the end of the world at least I have the two that are really necessary.

Questions.

1) The USB port doesn't work if something is plugged into another USB port?

2) Does device manager already have a driver installed, i.e no yellow exclamation marks present?

Not sure on your first question. Mouse and keyboard are in the main two ports, working fine and this one has the problem. Or you want me to try using only the problem port alone? 2: No yellow marks until I plug anything into the problem port. Unplug, mark goes away. And it recognizes what it is: flash drive/keyboard etc. Same error problem if I select update driver. In fact the driver is already in the pc for example the keyboard, but plugging the keyboard into the problem port does not work.

sounds like a hardware problem, unless that is a different kind of port from the others .

1) Try another port. Same issue?

2) Unplug all USB devices including keyboard and mouse and just plug in the problematic device. Same issue?

3) Is it a specific USB device that's acting up?

Every port has this problem with a flash drive. I have tried three different ones. Each work fine in other pc's and are different brands. I tried unplugging all devices and still no go with the flash drive. The keyboard and mouse have the same no driver problem in that secondary port but are fine in the main panel ports.

Seems like some kind of driver(s) that can't install for some reason since the only thing that won't work in the pc are flash drives. Will connect to data from the mouse or keyboard but not to memory data. Or maybe just some strange hardware issue.

Go into the computer's BIOS and comb over any USB settings.

Before I just start experimenting (things I can change back anyway) I will tell you what things I see for if they may be worth a shot at changing. I believe these are all set to defaults other than I changed UEFI 8 to UEFI 7. Current settings:

Under Power:
USB charge support - disabled

Under Features/USB configuration:
Legacy USB support – enabled
XHCI Hand-off – enabled
USB Mass Storage driver support – enabled
Port 60/64 Emulation - enabled

Well, as SIW2 said, it's looking more and more like a hardware issue.

Is there any software by chance on the computer that messes around with USB in any way?

What's Device Manager look like for the USB ports? Are all present and accounted for? What about there setting in Device Manager? The power save setting I always turn off. Even for the network card.

I don't think there is any program I have that would cause this. All the usual stuff I use and no problem in similar pc's.

Not sure what you mean by device manager for the usb ports. I just see nothing out of the ordinary but the yellow mark for any flash driver plugged in and the error when trying to install a driver.

I disabled the usb selective suspend setting.

I see there is a newer bios. I will do that. Maybe a chance it will fix this.

I believe that what may have happened is the w7 install I was using either has or developed a problem with one of the files where it could not install some drivers. Or maybe some other strange occurrence related to that. I used a different install iso and after finding a program to pre install the usb 3.0 driver I got it all working well. This pc is picky about this all. Not that new of a model (W7 era), but needs this help or you are dead with the install. Thanks for the help here.
