USB devices acting strange in upgrade Win 7 Ultimate

I just upgraded from 64 bit Vista Home Premium to 64 bit 7 Ultimate (I know all about clean installs versus upgrades and chose to upgrade to avoid having to re-install all my programs/settings...maybe my problem? I'm not ready to bag the upgrade yet) and now I am having USB device issues. I have spent hours looking at many posts and it would seem I am not alone but I have not found a conclusive solution.

My external HD, 160BG iPod Classic and Sony digital camera all are having fits now. Interestingly enough my HP Photosmart 2610xi printer and wireless mouse/keyboard (both USB devices) are working flawlessly. If I am coming off of clean boot up I can plug any of the offending devices in and get them to connect and start working as they should (all drivers are updated and fine). They work for a short period of time (less than five minutes) and then they stall/freeze/don't work right. The ipod freezes right in the middle of syncing, the camera will find pictures but if I start to transfer or work with them it feezez uo and the HD has similar access issues. After the freeze if I try to reconnect the devices I get "USB device not recognized errors" and device manager shows exclamation marks where the device is plugged in. If I manually disconnect the items and reboot the computer I can reconnect the items OK but get the same symptoms all over again.

I have read about flashing the Asus motherboard (P5N73-AM) BIOS, Updating the NVidia chipset drivers, turning off the "USB selective suspend feature", etc. etc. I am reluctant to just keep shooting in the dark and this is driving me bonkers. everything else about my Win 7 experience is positive.

Any SPECIFIC help from the masses? MUCH obliged!!

It sounds like driver issues especially with itunes and your ipod.
Like Torrent says do a clean install.

Try this first since you have an Nvidia chipset:

http://www.sevenforums.com/crashes-debugging/37600-hotfix-available-usb-problems.html#post370396

You're problem doesn't seem exactly the same, but it won't hurt to try before reformatting.

Tried it out...no go. I REALLY don't want to wipe my HD clean. Can't see why some USB devices are working but not others. Also don't understand why even the ones that don't work, work for a few minutes then quit!

Worth updating my MB BIOS first? I'm a bit leery of that too but seems better than a complete wipe.

You don't have to wipe out the drive.

Just clean install Windows to the same location and it will put all the existing stuff inside Windows.old folder at root.

You can then go through it for anything you want to keep and/or settings files for users for specific programs and copy/paste them to the new install etc...
An example of where this comes in very handy is Firefox. Winamp too etc...

Then you could use disk cleanup to get rid of the Windows.old folder once everything is out of it you want or need.

Thanks Torrent...I did go ahead with a clean install and unfortunately I still have the same problems.

What about this hotfix from MS? You encounter problems when you move data over USB from a Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2-based computer that has an NVIDIA USB EHCI chipset and at least 4GB of RAM

I tried it before the clean install and it did NOT work. Maybe I should run it again? I don't really know how to tell what "chipset" I have. I have an ASUS MoBo as listed in my specs and have flashed it to the most recent BIOS.

Thought I'd let the forum know that I did finally get resolution of my problem after I surfed over to the MS site referenced above using 64 bit IE and downloading with that to get the appropriate hotfix for my 64 bit OS. After updating Windows 7 with the hotfix my USB problems are gone. Thanks for the help!!
