Solved Issue in upgrading Win 7 home to Ultimate after having classpnp.sys

Last week my windows 7 Home premium didnt go into login screen it just stayed in the logo screen for long, then i tried to go into safe mode where it stayed at 'classpnp.sys'. After browsing through sevenforums i found many have encountered the issue. Currently i dont have my recovery CD with me, so i decided to buy Windows Ultimate upgrade.

As mine is a dual boot system with ubuntu 11.10, i just restored my windows MBR using 'boot-repair' in ubuntu. After rebooting the system i found myself in the Window boot manager screen. Which is good.

Then i changed my boot option to boot from DVD, once i restarted my system, it asked
'Press any key to boot from CD or DVD'
i did. Then, a screen appears with message
'Windows is loading files..'
Once the status bar is full it went to Windows logo screen again. Similar to my initial problem, it just stayed in the logo screen!

Now i cannot go into Windows and to ubuntu either!!!!!!

I dont know what is happening and why my upgreade DVD didnt take me to the installation process. I would appreciate any suggestions/comments? Thanks.

If you have GRUB on the HD it can corrupt Win7 irreparably. It's a good sign you were able to repair it but I would start over using this method: Dual boot Ubuntu-Win7.

The best way to Dual Boot is on separate HD's if you have them, setting Win7 as first HD to boot then triggering the other to boot using the BIOS Boot menu key.

Wipe the HD first using Diskpart Clean Command from the DVD DISKPART At PC Startup.

Everything you need is here to Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 including the latest installer ISO to burn to DVD or write to flash stick. There is no reason to buy new Win7 as you own a Home Premium license on the computer for it's life and will lose it's $100+ value if you use another license which can be used elsewhere.

Just to make sure i understood your suggestion.

Do i need to remove ubuntu completely?

Wipe the HD first using Diskpart Clean Command from the DVD DISKPART At PC Startup.

Which DVD?? the one i have?

Yes, the Win7 DVD or System Repair Disk

Normally it takes wiping the HD to reinstall Win7 if it is blocked by GRUB code in the boot sector. SSD - HDD Optimize for Windows Reinstallation

Actually that is what my problem is, the Windows 7 ultimate upgrade DVD i have is not taking me anywhere, its just going to 'Starting Windows' logo screen and stays there. There is nothing else i can do with that.

Pardon me for dumb questions, but I am not sure how you are asking me to format the disk with the DVD I have, because it is not taking me to the installation process. It will be great help if you can state it in steps so that i can follow. Thanks

Then download the Home Premium installer which is licensed on that rig choosing 32 bit if under 4 gb RAM and possibly 64 bit if more than 4 gb depending on the strength of the processor. 32 bit vs 64 bit Comparison - Windows 7 Forums

Burn to DVD or write to flash stick using the tool given in Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 then follow the steps to get a perfect reinstall.

Hi

I wonder why Ultimate upgrade DVD is not installing? and how can we be sure that the Home premium that i will be downloading will work?

I am not sure what stopping Ultimate upgrade from doing its job? can you please enlighten me on what is causing the problem?

If you have a COA sticker on the machine then install the licensed version printed on it and it will work to Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7.

If you have a Product Key to activate Ultimate then download and burn or write a new official Win7 installer if you want to waste the Home Premium which came with the machine.

If these continue to fail then reset BIOS to default settings to try install. Next wipe the HD first with Diskpart Clean Command from DVD Command Line using DISKPART At PC Startup

Hi

I completely formated my disk and made it unallocated, then inserted Win7 home premium DVD that i wrote from the link you gave. It boots into Windows then said
'Windows in loading files' once that is done,
it again went to 'Starting Windows' screen and stayed there forever. Its not taking me to the installation process!!!

I am not sure what is happening here. Can you help??

Did you wipe the HD with Diskpart Clean command as suggested three times? SSD - HDD Optimize for Windows Reinstallation

Reset BIOS to defaults: Clear CMOS - 3 Ways to Clear the CMOS - Reset BIOS
While in BIOS setup set SATA controller to AHCI to try install.

Unplug all other HD's and peripherals.

How did you burn the DVD? Try writing to flash stick using tool provided. Boot stick using one-time BIOS Boot Menu key, under USB, Removable or HD's.

It worked!!

It worked with your previous suggestion..completely wiped the hdd and installed it. It seems the Lenovo heat ventillation for the processor is not that good, it blocked from moving further. Once i give double fan cooling fo the processor it went it and installed.. strange but true!!!
