Solved USB Driver Install Problem

Forget all that Windows DVD, device manager, properties, right clicking stuff. It's not going to install that way. The file you downloaded is a self extracting zip file. After it's downloaded, run it! It should start a Setup program and install the driver(s).

Here's what is in the zip file.

carwiz, I think he has tried that method as well. They why I suggested bit defender could be the issue but it was disabled. I guess defenderjim has the paid version of bit defender because the free version can not be disabled or I would be using it.

Car wiz,

Yes, I have that same setup program and files. I have run it. Just like you say.

It says everything worked fine. But still can't scan. PS says that the twain folder is empty. Device manager thinks there are no drivers installed.

Groze,

I happen to have bitdefender. I switched over a few weeks ago from avg. I have the free version of bd. I am able to disable it from the sys tray.

And yes, it is just as you say, I have tried the epson setup proggy many times. Always says it works. Never does any good.

Bit defender must of added a way to disable bit defender in the free version because the last version I tried didn't have that option. I will have to check it out again.

Not under that "Scanner" section.

Only under the "Other" devices section.

Not device manager, in the program you're using to scan. You usually have to select the Source.

Also, run this SF Diagnostic program so we can get a look at the system. Be sure to "Run as Administrator" and use the Grab All button. Allow at least five minutes for all the steps to complete.

In PhotoShop -> Import, it does show "Epson Twain 5". Click that and I get:
---------------------------
Twain_32
---------------------------
Could not open the TWAIN source. Make sure there is a valid source for your scanner in the TWAIN directory found in the Windows directory.
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------
As far as the diag tool goes, it crashed. I would've included the crash report, but the dialog box wouldn't copy the text, and the screen shot was too big for the forum

I restarted, and it worked fine.

With all the troubleshooting done, i would suggest:
- doing a virus/malware scan.
- replace the USB cable use for connecting the scanner to the PC.

Shottas,
I rebooted into a my old xl system so I could do virus scan without worry of an infectio affecting the results, I did get root kitted a few years back. That was a lot of fun. Hit man pro, avg, bitdefender and malware bytes all say I am clean.

Carwiz,

In my twain folder, there is wiatwain.ds
A Nikon folder for my slide scanner.
And epfb5 folder, that would be the epson folder.
In there are some dlls a .ptn .cnt .ds and a help file

Shottas,
I know the cable is good. I installed the trial version of vuescan, and it works fine. Trail scans are watermarked, so I can't use them. Besides, i am bothered that this used to work, now it doesn't, don't know what the problem is.

I am usually the "go to" person for tech support issues. So, you can get an idea of how bad it is if I am asking for help!!

Look
I think it might be worth a shot at running the Kaspersky rescue disk it will scan without involving Windows
I am on my tablet right now so just Google that and it will guide you through the process of creating the disk or USB stick. It doesn't take that long to run either. At very least it will scan everything from power up and root out anything hiding away until Windows gets going.

ICIT2LOL,

Well, true enough, but I refer to my earlier post in which I essentially did the same thing, where I booted into a different OS, on a different hard drive and did several scans, all of which came up clean.

I rebooted into a my old xl system so I could do virus scan without worry of an infection affecting the results, I did get root kitted a few years back. That was a lot of fun. Hit man pro, avg, bitdefender and malware bytes all say I am clean.

I really don't think this is a virus / malware problem. Just something isn't right in the configuration and needs to be fixed. Just can't figure out what. This used to work, don't know what has changed.
