I took my HP Photosmart 3210 off the network and tried to use it via the usb port, but neither of my laptops reconize it. I uninstalled the HP driver, rebooted, and reinstalled. I get to where it says to choose network or usb, I click usb radio button, but the "next" does not highlight. It worked fine when it was on the network. I have tried another cable and the other usb port on the laptop. I'll assume the laptop is ok because I can plug in the usb mouse in any usb port and it works.

My laptop is a Dell 1558, win7 home premium 64 bit.

I didn't take the time to spec your computer but this is from the User Guide for your printer-

"Connect using a USB cableTo connect your HP All-in-One using a USB cable, follow the instructions in theprinted Setup Guide. If your computer cannot communicate with the HP All-in-One, make sure your HP All-in-One and the computer have the same version of USB. Your HP All-in-One is set touse USB 2.0. Therefore, if your computer has USB 1.1, you should either update youroperating system, or you should change the speed of the rear USB port on the HP All-in-One to Full Speed (USB 1.1)."

If that doesn't help, I suggest opening Control Panel, Device Manager, Universal Bus System Controllers and make sure no errors are shown for the USB ports.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll play with it tomorrow. I have looked into device manager and did not see any exclamation points.

Still no luck I took of the side cover and blew out all the dust. The solder joints look good where the usb port connects to the circuit board. Tried the troubleshooter with no luck. Changed the printer to lpt2 from lpt1. No warnings when viewing device manager. How do I change the speed of the rear USB port on the HP All-in-One to Full Speed (USB 1.1)? I can't find the owners manual or find one on HP's website.

You can read the user guide here-

Hp Photosmart 3210 Manuals

Look at page 28 for the speed change

I just took a look at the specs for your system. There's one USB 2.0 port and two USB 3.0 ports. Is the printer connected to the USB 2.0 port?

Thanks. was set to 2.0. I changed it to 1.1. Rebooted the computer and the printer. It is still not reconized. Tried HP's diagnostic program. Says it is not connected. I think my next step is to call Verizon and see how I connect it to their fios boxes with the ethernet cable. Must be something going on with the usb portion of the printer. Thanks again for all the help.

Yes, 2.0 was the default, per the manual. Since you have ports higher than 1.1, I would put it back to 2.

Have you disabled the network connection in the HP Printer Control Panel?

When you made the USB connection, did you reinstall the printer using the installation disc?

Go to the Windows Control Panel, Printers. If your printer is shown, click on it. Select Printer\Properties. In the Ports tab, is the printer shown to print to a USB virtual printer port?

I reset it back to 2.0

Have you disabled the network connection in the HP Printer Control Panel?

I'm not sure. This is what I did: I went into network settings and changed turn OFF network discovery from turn ON. turn OFF file and printer sharing from turn ON. turn OFF public sharing from turn ON.

When you made the USB connection, did you reinstall the printer using the installation disc?

Well..............I don't have the disc. The disc only goes to Win XP, and will not install on this Win 7 laptop. I downloaded a Win & version from HP's page

Go to the Windows Control Panel, Printers. If your printer is shown, click on it. Select Printer\Properties. In the Ports tab, is the printer shown to print to a USB virtual printer port?

There is no USB port listed. LPT1.2.3 and COM1,2,3,4. There is a "add port" radio button which brings up the choices local port and standard tcp/ip port.

What happens when you try to run the CD?

If there's a installation file for Win 7, I would run it again.

Open the disc in Windows Explorer. Find the Setup.exe. Right click on it and select Properties. In the Compatibility tab, change the mode to XP SP3. Also, check the box to "run this program as administrator." Apply the changes and run the file.

Thanks. The label on the disc only goes up to XP. I'll do that when I get home. Do I remove/uninstall what I already installed and use the disc. Win 7 was not released when we bought this printer,

Since you installed with a file from HP, I would uninstall it first.

I uninstalled what I had. Tried the cd, saw there was a win 7 in compatibility mode, but it still won't print. Uninstalled and tried win xp sp3, same thing. I think it is the printer that won't communicate using usb. I'll call Verizon to see what i need to do to get back onto the network. I was on Verizon phone modem, now on fios.

You said you had a Win 7 file for the installation. Now that you've made the USB connection, you might try installing it again using that file. I would disconnect the USB connection before starting and then, connect when the installation asks you to do that. All the printers I've ever had are HP and that's the way they do it. I assume you've gone into the printers Control Panel (not Windows) and made the network disconnect, which we talked about earlier.

Most of the HP printers have a troubleshooting mode in the software. You might try running that. You could also ask about your problem in the HP forum.

Don't think buying another printer is necessary but that's your choice.
