I never had a problem before but one of my usb ports stopped working. I just get a message saying that i exceeded the power level. When i tried it on other ports that particular mouse doesn't work in any of them, however my other mouse which is wireless works.
That problem happened to me 10 years ago. Cause was that cat chewed on the mouse cord. My solution was to buy a new mouse. Do you have cats?

Yes my wireless mouse works , oddly when i plug the wired non working mouse into the usb port that's next to the working mouse it renders both mice dead.
USB ports are often grouped in pairs and may be driven by the same IC. You kill one and the other dies with it. It does sound like the mouse has a short circuit in it. Even new stuff can fail prematurely. USB ports have a built in overcurrent protection so if a device draws more than 500 MA the port will shut down. You normally have to shut the PC down and power cycle it for the port to reset itself. Its happened to me and I had to unplug the AC power cord and hit the case power button to drain the power supply before it would reset.
