USB Portals on Windows 7 Not Recognizing Multiple Mice

For the purposes of full disclosure, I have been used a Dell Inspiron 1545 for the best part of 4 years now, and I am well aware that the following problem may be down to my device drivers simply being knackered.

For at least the past 3 months, all three of my USB portals are failing to recognise mice that I plug in. What normally happens is that after several weeks of working fine, the mice will simply seize up one day, and however many times I try plugging them into seprate USB portals, I get the usual "USB Device not recognized".

Sometimes if the (useless) mouse is still plugged in, I get a message after about an hour saying that the 'device driver manager' has failed to install the mouse. I've tried uninstalling 'Unknown Device' in Device Manager and rebooting my laptop, but nothing so far has yet worked.

The puzzling thing is that other USB cables, to help charge my Samsung and iTouch, are recognised straightaway and work perfectly fine. It's only the mice that are failing to be recognised by my laptop!

I am at my wit's end trying to figure out a solution, so any help/tips (or constructive criticism) would be greatly received!

Many thanks!

Hi welcome to the forum

when yoyu hook up your phones it is just to charge them or to transfer data. if data is able to do that? try installing the chipset drivers from dell support site.

Yes, I am able to transfer data or upload pictures from my phone's DCIM file, via the USB cable.

OK go into BIOS and check for legacy support and enable it if not already

Thanks, I'll try that. What key combination do I need to enter BIOS on Windows 7? Sorry, but I've never had to access it before on my laptop!

Well it very by manufacturer. Could be F2 or F1 or F10 or delete key. When you start the laptop it might say on bottom of screen what key to press to enter setup
