usb to ps2 problems with mouse

Hi I am having trouble with a new Toshiba laptop with Windows 7 . I am trying to interface it with these old school trackballs that have a ps2 connector and the laptop does not have any ps2 ports so I was able to get a ps2 to usb adapter,(no driver required). I plugged the usb plug into the computer and the laptop made a noise like it had detected the device but a couple seconds later it makes another noise like it is uninstalling the device and it just keeps cycling that pattern. I am not getting CODE 10 on my device manger no error codes just keeps recognizing and then uninstalling. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

It could be that they just aren't compatible? How old are they?

Many of these older PS2 devices dont work properly in those adapters... I am assuming the adapter is firmly secured and you are plugging it in like any usb device.
