Hi,

I got Win 7 64 bit with a Asus P7P55D-E motherboard and a Intel i5 2,66 GHz, a Seagates 1 To Baracuda 7200 RPM...

When I plug my external HDD or a USB stick, i got a transfert rate between 100 Kb/s to 3 Mb/s... It's really slow when a USB2 can handle 480 Mb/s...

When I try to cancel a transfert, nothing to do, Windows try to cancel until I reboot...

I got the last USB and SATA driver update...

Anybody can help me please ?

You are not going to always see the maximum transfer rate even with the new USB 3.0 standard or with any bus for that matter. There are all kinds and sizes of files to consider for a start as well as how much is taxing the usb bus at the time.

Another found with just usb flash drives alone in a different in brands for the same capacity like a 2gb or 4gb as well as the particular model will play a role as well. One example is seen with the commonly found San Disk tried out on different systems where that could be used on some troublesome hubs as well while others like PNY and HP suffered. The San Disk drives were found to have slower rates then when going to use a Kingston DT model.

The same applies to the external hard drives which are typically the budget or with WD for example the Green Power energy saver models where the performance is lower. That will also effect transfer rates. How much you have running in the background is another factor to consider as well since resources can be taxed in some way there too.

Thanks for the answer !

For sure, there's a lot of thing that can have an effect on the speed...

My computer have a quadcore i5 2,66 GHz and 8 gig DDR3 1600 ram. The graphic card is a Readon 5750. It's a new computer that i built my self this last january.

I can use the 2 USB3 port but i don't get yet USB3 peripheric...

My parents have a computer with Vista and the USB2 is really more fast than my new computer ! My computer is really 2-3-4 times faster than them on everything...

What can I verify/test/change to get a better speed ?

That's a typical windows 7 problem that's pretty much ignored by Microsoft. I has to do with a lack of necessary collaboration between Microsoft and the various manufacturers, with nobody taking up the slack in providing windows 7 specific hardware drivers. It is also a result of windows 7 throttling USB operations. The problem that can only be solved by either waiting for a windows 7 drivers specifically designed for your motherboard or switching to linux.. I have a laptop that transfers files from a usb flash drive at over 100MB/s in Ubuntu but only at about 10-15MB/s in windows

Well I guess that's another reason for installing Linux on a flash drive rather then on a VM! :D

I have a few USB 3.0 ports on the new build here but still have to wait for those initial prices to fall on 3.0 flash drives now seen since they typically run for upto twice as much or more then the 2.0 version. In actuality however the speeds incated any drive is capable of is the maximum you could generally expect to see.

Most of the time those are rated by use for Windows or Apple/Mac however not necessarily including the open source lot there as far as OSs are concerned. Different OSs of course are seeing things in a different environment to begin with ubuntu being one of the smaller distros there.
