I hope this is the right place to post this. I have read in several places where I should not be running my computer using administrator account. When I go to user accounts there is Administrator which is me. Guest which is not set up and ASP.NET Machine account. Password protected. I don't know what that is. I would venture a guess that it belongs to whom ever installed 7 on this computer. I am running this pc through a router/modem. On this network in my home is a laptop. It's just me and my wife on these machines. I don't really know what to do about this. Any ideas on this one? Thanks,

While in your administrator account, create a user account for yourself. That should be the account you use for routine work. It is safer.

I have no ideas where the
ASP account came from. Since it is password protected, you can't use it. You should be able to delete this account from your admin account.

Should add a word of caution, do not delete YOUR admin account.

I did create a user account. I noticed that all the w 7 bells and whistles are enabled. Aero etc. Will I be able to set this account up just like I did in the admin. account? Such as set for best performance, disable aero etc? I should note that we don't like to use passwords here at home.

Yes, you should be able to tailor this account to suit your preferences. Enabling aero actually can benefit your system. Any particuclar reason you want to disable aero?

I did it for performance. Please enlighten me if that was not needed. Also, before I new this about not using Admin account, I have downloaded Google Chrome, Firefox and other things. IE is set up the way my wife likes it. I don't really want to download all this software again and don't know about finding every bookmark for every browser. Is there a way to move or transfer things from Admin account to the user account? I don't want Firefox and Google Chrome on here twice.

Disabling it will reduce initial boot time. When enabled, it uses the memory on your video card rather than RAM. This can actually speed up your system. I can't see the difference either way on my system. You have ample memory on your system to use aero.

You do not need to install the software again. You can copy the shortcuts from your admin account to your user account. I can't give you the steps as I am traveling and using my XP notebook. But everything can be duplicated in your user account. I hope someone will post and give you the instructions.

Me too. Here is what I would like to do. Set up the new user account to look just like the admin set up. All the same shorcuts, performance settings etc. When I boot up, automatically log in to this account. Not give me a choice of accounts. Maybe even hide the Admin account. Is this possible?

I have just created a new standard account. All programs that added a shortcut to the desktop upon installation have their shortcut in the new account. If you have created other shortcuts manually you will have to re-create them or copy them over.

I don't know if Tip: Auto-Login Your Windows 7 User Account | Sarah In Tampa | Channel 10 will work with more than one account set-up. I'll be trying it later myself.

You can change the performance settings manually or maybe Copy files & settings with Windows Easy Transfer | The Windows Club will work. Maybe that will also work for the shortcuts.

How would you get to your admin account when you need it if it were hidden?

I don't know. I thought maybe there was a way to hide it from everyone but me. I guess, as long as it's password protected, it would be alright. Come to think of it, I have used the Administrator account in everything from W 95 on up and never had a problem. The occasional virus tried to get in but was always caught. I hope MSE is as good as I've heard.

I would password the admin account and leave the user account without a password. You will get used to the two accounts showing up. It is just one extra screen and one extra click.

To be honest, I run with my admin account most of the time. I do have a user account and my wife has a user account. All of our accounts are password protected because we have visitors from time to time. For them, activate the Guest account.

That said, you have a lot more system protection if you do your routine browsing, game playing, and emailing from a user account. In other words, "do as I say, not as I do".

You mentioned Google Chrome, Firefox and bookmarks. If you want to duplicate the bookmarks in the new account:

Ok to set up your shortcuts for your new user ....

To work with these folders set your windows explorer to show hidden and system files in the Organise - floder & search options.

items in the following location are available to all users ....

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu

Items at this location are only available to the User Username

C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu

Simply copy and paste the items to the folders required

I would actually suggest that you create an account for your wife as well as the one for yourself as personal settings for items such as Internet explorer Etc.are stored for each user sowould allow both of you to have your own settings.

There is an option in all major browsers to export favourites which can then be imported into another user's copy

you need not set a password on the standard accounts but I would set one on the administrator account as if you start an action that needs administrator authority windows will prompt you to enter this password which I find a useful check to think to yourself "is this what I want to do"
