User folder - rename

Just started on Windows 7.
The default Users folder is VALUED CUSTOMER and everything added is going in there. Am I able to rename this folder to something like JIMARCH, or must I add myself as a new user and reinstall everything?

The best option would be to create yourself a new administrator account, copy over what you like from the old account, then delete the old VALUED CUSTOMER account afterwards.

I suggest you to make another user and move all stuff to the new user. You don't have to reinstall anything.

Rename VALUED CUSTOMER

I have tried to rename C:\Users\Valued Customer where all my files, etc. are ending up. In the Control Panel ... users, I am logged on as JimArch, which is what I want. Now, if i could only change the folder name to C:\Users\JimArch - all would be well. Tried to rename via Explorer and there is no rename option in the menu that appears after a right click on the folder. I've tried renaming the folder under a different utility, and get: Cannot rename - Please remove write protection.

Does everyone who uses Windows 7 end up as "VALUED CUSTOMER"?

Jim,

Since you have a OEM (store bought) computer, the "VALUED CUSTOMER" account is just a default that the OEM (eMachine) had set up by default from the factory on their computers.

I would recommend to create yourself a new administrator account (click on link), password protect it, copy over what you like from the old account, then delete the old "VALUED CUSTOMER" account afterwards.

Every time you create an account, a User Profile is set up containing the user's personal settings such as desktop layout and start folder settings.

I would be inclined to go to Start>Control Panel>User Accounts & Family Safety>Add or Remove User Accounts and set up a new account with the name JimArch.

Once you've set up the new account to your liking you can delete the old one that you can't rename.

I'm assuming of course that you are using your own personal computer. If you are on a domain at work you'd need to speak to the IT administrator to set things up for you, subject to any restrictions that have been applied to your account.

Here's what I have done:

1. There's only one user listed on this OEM machine - JimArch (me)
2. I have created a new folder: C:\Users\JimArch 2.4 gig
3. All the contents in C:\Users\Valued Customer 3.5 gig have been copied to the new folder.
4. Not sure why the difference here
5. If I can't rename that VALUED CUSTOMER folder, I doubt I can delete it

Did you actually create a new user account to be an administrator, or just a new folder in C:\Users?

Just creating a new folder will not work.

Yep. We have our own special way of handling things in Texas.
