I am trying to figure out if its possible to print from applications instaled in Win 7 Using an XP compatible pdf printer software (Print2Pdf) installed in XP mode. The problemis because its installed on the XP virtual machine the printer does not appear in the Win 7 printers list. I do not wish to install the programmes I wish to print from in XP mode as well just to use this pdf printer. Is there a work around for this problem?

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Kind Regards

Chris

I would just install CutePDF (free) on Win7 and do it from there, unless there are features in Print2Pdf you are looking for that that can't handle. Otherwise, I would imagine you could just save the file you want to print to pdf, open Print2Pdf as an XP program in XP mode, load the file you want to print, and do it from there.

Thanks for your reply. Print2Pdf can merge pages in two or more pdf files which is something I haven't found in a free pdf printer. Unfortunately I can't open print2pdf in XP mode because it is not the type of programme that launches as an exe file. It can only be selected from another programme as a pdf printer in the printer list. As it was installed in XP mode unfortunately it doesn't appear in the Win 7 environment printer list. I wonder if there is some kind of work around.

Kind Regards

Chris

I wonder if you could do it by Add Printer in Win 7. Try that and see if it's available as a local printer.

•Choose Add Printer
•Click Add a Local Printer
•Choose <your PDF writer> in the Use an existing port drop-down

Edit: You could also try installing Print2PDF in Win 7 using compatibility mode.

Thanks again. The first time I tried to install this on Win 7 I had a ton of problems and it wouldn't work. Maybe I forgot to use the troubleshoot compatibility option. This time I installed in XP SP2 mode and it seems to be working although I did get a warning that said there are compatibility issues. Anyway I tried some tests printing to pdf and so far so good. I will wait and see how things go.

Regarding the other option of adding a printer I got stuck after it asked me to find my printer from a list as I had no idea how to select the printer from the virtual XP machine. I may still have to go for that option in the future if the application gives me problems on Win 7 but so far so good. Your help is much appreciated.

Kind Regards

chris

need to have at least version 8.0

First of all you need to be sure you have at least version 8 if you use VISTA/Windows 7. Previous version does not work correctly. I downloaded mine version from BinaryNow site.

http://www.binarynow.com/download/

and it works fine on Windows 7 Home. When you install it, be sure that you are running installation under administrator rights. I run old QB 2002 in xp mode on Windows 7 ( it does not work any other way) and can print into Print2PDF without any problems, you just need to be sure that Print2PDF TSR is running and your applicaton can access it. Good luck.

Adding printer does not work for Print2PDF 8 on VISTA/7. It works only on XP and older. You need to install it directly from installer or your can create client installation from already installrf Print2DPF 8 and use this install in virtual enviroment.

Peso, thanks for your input. Print2pdf 8 is supposed to be compatible on Win 7 by direct install as you say although version 6 evidently is not compatible. After just trying a direct install with V6 in XP SP2 mode it seems OK so far. Time will tell. There will probably be some issues but it may be able to do the basic things I need. If there are future problems I will have to install in XP mode and take it from there.

Kind Regards

Chris

Thanks again to all for helping me with this issue. Just to let everyone know that the developers were kind enough to come out with a free version of Print2pdf version 9 that runs on Windows 7. Now I can use this to merge pdf documents.
