Our server (host) has one USB printer and one ethernet printer. In XP Mode (guest) I can see the USB printer in USB->Attach, but not the ethernet printer. I installed the ethernet printer with HP's software, and have gone through 23 TS0nn ports attempting to reach the printer, but none of these ports work. I have tried "new" ports. still without success. The routine I've used is:

1. In XP Mode selected "Printers and Faxes"
2. Clicked "Add a Printer" to start the printer-installation, selected "Local Printer attached to this computer" (and cleared the checkbox next to "Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play Printer").
3. selected all of the TS number ports, one at a time, the tested each with a print job, but cannot print to this printer .

What am I missing?

There are two things you can try:
* Install it in Windows 7, and then share it, then see if you can access the share from the XP session.
* Install it in the old-fashioned way as a network printer in XP.

Here's how to install it the old-fashioned way in XP, as a network printer. You actually have to choose "local printer", not "network printer". (The "local" part is actually the local port you install on the XP machine.) I don't have XP here to verify this, but here are the steps as I recall them:
  • Download the basic printer driver for your printer. Unzip or install it to a folder that is accessible to your XP Mode session.
  • Get the printer's IP address - write it down. In fact, if you are able to, assign a static IP address to the printer via the printer's menu. Having the printer's IP address will make installing the printer a very simple task.
  • On the Devices and Printers screen of XP Mode, choose Add a Printer. Tell it a Local printer, not a Network printer.
  • You will install it to a custom port. Make it a basic TCP-IP port.
  • Input the printer's IP address in the IP address field.
  • Choose a port name that fits the printer -- for example, FirstFloorHP2500 -- don't put any spaces.
  • At some point it will ask you to select the printer, and to tell it where the driver is. Do that.
If all of the above steps are followed, you should have successfully installed your Ethernet printer in the XP session.
