Having problems booting, using recovery disk. When search for install to repair, it finds one install on drive e. I know windows was/is on drive c. Something wrong here? Could it be that original install partition is inactive and it's finding and trying to repair an aborted reinstall? If so, help. When I boot machine, get disk boot error. Bios boot order is HD, then cd. But one place in bios where there ought to be a master there is none. Tried bootrec.exe (all three), they say they are successful, but no change.

Drive letters can be different wehen booting from another OS (the recovery disc). So E is fine.

"bios boot roder is HDTV then CD"?? What is HDTV?

"When I boot machine, get disk boot error"=>what exact error message?

Sorry for lack of clarity. When I start machine, after bios screen, get "disc read error, press C-Alt-Del".

On standard CMOS setup page, boot order says sata1 hard disk, sata2 atapi CDROM. On advanced CMOS page, boot order says 1st st3300631a, 2nd atapi iHas....

On the auto detect bios page is where I see a slave identified but no master.

In machine I have two internal hard drives. c: drive for system and programs, and e: drive for data.

But when using recovery console dos prompt, the c: drive there is system reserved, the d: drive is the data drive, and the e: drive has windows files program files, etc. so what you said above makes sense.

BTW, the install that recovery finds and tries to repair is listed as e: windows ultimate 7 (recovered).

One last thing. Again at above mentioned c: prompt, when I run bootrecs/rebuildbcd, it identifies zero windows installs.

=>you want to boot from st3300631a?

Boot your machine again from recovery environment. When it display "Press any key to boot from CD/DVD" ... don't press anything. Just wait... after about 10 seconds it should boot from harddisk. Works?

Same error message?

I assume you mean use the restart button on screen with repair, restore, c prompt, etc?

When I click on restart, comes up to same "disc read error, c/a/d".
If I do c/a/d, comes up to same message

No errors, problems, etc.
This probably isn't important but last line each time says "failed to transfer ..... To event log with status 50"

C and D are active........

I made d: inactive and it booted up fine.
Thank you so much.
Probably elementary for you, but not for me.
Leave at 5 am so I am glad I shouldn't have to come home to problems,
But if I do I'll be back.
Thanks again.
