Vaio screen res. & graphics not working after 7 upgrade

Hello, Please help!!!

I recently upgraded from XP to Windows 7. Now my nVidia Graphics Card does not seem to be recognized and my screen resolution is stuck at 1024 x 768 and doesn't even fill all of the screen...Also, games that I used to play online I can't hardly see at all. I have tried the Sony Support site and the nVidia site to download drivers and anything else I can find to no avail. I also noticed another thread on this but couldn't find a solution that worked for me. Anyone???

nVidia GEForce ( I believe it's GO 7400 but I can't find that info anymore since the upgrade...)

Download HWInfo32 and use it to find you GPU and then find any unknown devices with an app from Halfdone Development. Then download the drivers the programs find. If its a Go 7400 then get that.

Did you upgrade or perform a "clean" install?

Most all of us agree that an upgrade is not the route to take. It leaves useless files on your system and can cause conflicts.like you're seeing now

Save all you Documents, Pictures, contacts, videos, music, etc to a flash drive,

Be aware, you will need to re-install your 3rd party applications.

There i poll going on now and "clean" install is winning by a mile,.

I'm 99% sure the card is NVIDIA GeForce Go 7400 and Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 (128MB)

Thanks, I did actually perform a clean install.

And I downloaded the Beta from HalfDone. I couldn't find HWinfo32. It found Biometric Coprocessor, Mass Storage Controller, and 3 Unknown Devices. One was....* Windows Description - Unknown device
* Hardware ID - VID_05CA&PID_1830
* Device Category (Class) - Other devices
* Enumerator - USB
* Detected Chip Vender - <unknown, id=05CA>
* Detected Chip Device - <unknown, id=1830>
* Detected Vender - <unknown, id=>
* Detected Device - <unknown, id=>
* Device Status Flags - Detected, Unknown, Present, Not Phantom, Category Visable

I also downloaded the software from nVidia for Windows 7 32 bit and Vista and neither would install. Both times it gave me an error message and aborted the setup.


Any further ideas? or did I miss something?

FZ21Z Has helped several members with his post on modding the .inf. Their is also another program, if used properly will help with the moding of an .inf for laptops from NVIDIA MobilityModder - DriverHeaven.net Either way should work. good Luck . Fabe

Hi, I'm running a Sony Vaio SZ 23GP, which is basically the Asian version of your laptop. I recently upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate, and had the exact same problems you did. Took me 2 days, and sifting through tons of forum posts to get everything working.

Here's what you need to do:
1) Most of the unknown devices are stuff such as the webcam, memory stick reader etc.
2) 2 important devices listed as "Unknown" are the Sony Notebook Controller (called Sony NC) and the Sony Programmable I/O Device. You need to download drivers and manually install them via device manager. These are needed to get the FN keys, S1, S2 key and the brightness/ volume keys to work as they did in XP. You can recognize these devices, as they are not connected to the USB bus, unlike the webcam etc.
3) Sony did not really release Vista/Win 7 drivers for the SZ 2 series. You need to find the Vista drivers for the newer SZ models, and use these. Your XP drivers won't work.
4) For the Go 7400 card, download an SZ Vista driver from the Sony support site. Choose a newer model, but one that's not too new. SZ 4 series seems to work well. The driver package won't install since there's a model check, so use a universal extractor to rip out the nvidia installer. That shld solve your problem.
5) Install Sony utilities such as the shared library, Vaio Event service etc. to restore your FN keys.

Hope this helps. Its a lot of hard working getting the laptop to function as it did in XP... but its possible.
