VAIO spontaneous BSOD - middle of exam time!

Hi, I'm looking for some advice about this error which is occuring more and more frequently.

I updated my VAIO a few months ago from Vista to Windows 7 - the computer now crashes spontaneously (and also crashes when I try to install anything) and I'm presented with BSOD and the following info:

For the code 1000008e - the BSOD index says that "usually the exception address pinpoints
the driver/function that caused the problem."

How do I find the exception address?

The exception address is 890C986E (BCP2 = BugCheck Parameter 2)
Further down on the link for the error:

The following parameters appear on the blue screen. Parameter Description 1 The exception code that was not handled 2 The address where the exception occurred 3 The trap frame 4 Reserved

The problem then becomes finding out what's at that location. Often it's a user level problem (and that info isn't in a minidump) or it's a bad address and nothing significant is located there.

I'm running the 14 memory dump files and will post back when they're done....

Just lost a very long post here.

In short, the dumps blame this driver:
symsnap.sys - StorageCraft Volume Snap-Shot or Symantec/Norton Backup Exec

StorageCraft: Backup and Disaster Recovery Software Support
Norton/Symantec:
- Support: Anti-virus Programs - Spyware Detection Software | Norton Support
- Downloads: Symantec Downloads: Antivirus Download - Anti-spyware Protection - Free Virus Removal
Please uninstall the offending program to see if it stops the BSOD's. If it does, then download a fresh copy of the program if you want to reinstall it.

Also, please remove or update these older drivers that were loaded at the time of the crash. Don't use Windows Update or the Update drivers function of Device Manager.
Please use the following instructions to locate the most currently available drivers to replace the one's that you uninstall OR remove:

How To Find Drivers:
- search Google for the name of the driver
- compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
- visit the web site of the manufacturer of the hardware/program to get the latest drivers (DON'T use Windows Update or the Update driver function of Device Manager).
- if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone will try and help you locate the appropriate program.

Success!

I can't believe it, thank you so much - that's resolved the problem completely!! No more BSOD, and I can install and uninstall programs without the computer crashing!

Not all those drivers had updates, though - does that matter? All the drivers that belong to Sony didn't have any updates at all, but ones from Intel and Toshiba has easily-accessible updates.

A huge 'thank you' once again usasma - now I can get on with some revision!

While the c0000005 is usually a memory error we need the actual DMP file to be of any use. use these to find and upload it to us. http://www.sevenforums.com/crash-lockup-debug-how/34900-1-novice-how-ask-help-bsod-problem.html

Update the drivers as you can find them. The only reason I mentioned them is because they were older. That doesn't mean that there's a problem with them - but they are more likely to have problems than newer drivers do.
