For some reason I am getting very slow DL speeds using Utorrent. It starts up ok, with a reasonably healthy Kbs, then slowly drops down to 1-2 Kbs.
I have tried many torrents from different sources as to be sure it wasn't the source of the DL's.

I remember there used to be a Tp open port patch for XP, does vista need something similar?

Maybe it is time for an antivirus scan and to download and scan with malwarebytes.
Perform the full scan (about 90 minutes and update the definitions before using)

WOW dAnnybOy66 please be nice. richc46 is only offering help. Many on this forum and other great forums recommend Malware Anti Malware. I have used it a very long time and it works great. I see you use Utorrent. IMHO that is a very good reason to run MAM and Super Anti Spyware. They are both on demand only and a very good place to start with your problem. Have a nice day.

My humblest appologies, it just seemed to be a rediculous answer. no offence meant. Failed to see how that would help, I did that anyway, but it didnt help.

I did not think dAnnybOy66 was being mean - he said "lol". But the comment, "in case you hadn't noticed" was probably unnecessary, if not inappropriate.

But to that, dAnnybOy66, in case you hadn't noticed, the use of torrents and P2P filesharing is one of, if not the most common method of malware distribution and infestation! Not to mention, torrents are most often used for illegal filesharing of copyrighted materials such as music, videos, and other published documents. For this reason, discussing such illegal activities is strictly forbidden by the rules you agreed to when you joined, and may result in instant banning.

The fact you failed to see how scanning for malware would help is, frankly, a bit naive and hardly an excuse since (1) badguys commonly use filesharing methods to introduce and distribute their malicious code, (2) slow performance is a "classic" symptom of malware infestation and (3) you failed to state in your opening post if you had taken any anti-malware precautions, or removal steps - therefore, Rich's suggestion was most appropriate, and hardly ridiculous.

If scanning with MBAM and SAS found anything, the malicious code may have been removed, but collateral damage may already have been done.

Ahh, I did not realise such topics were taboo. For that I do apologise, and I wasn't , well ok I may have been a bit of a smart arse, so I apologise again.

Just frustrating is all. Had a few issues with Win 7, nothing that hasn't been fixed after a bit of hunting around, I have spent about 4 days in total getting a few things right and thought, oh no, not another one.

Naive, well maybe, just updated from XP to Win 7 so I am pretty clueless as to the workings of it. Malware has never been a problem in the past, and the problem started Immediately, before anything had come down so I just presumed it was something else. Thanks for the feedback and quick lesson on possible security issues. I appreciate it.

If you just upgraded to Win 7, it may be a driver issue. Make sure all your hardware has the latest drivers for Win 7.

That's what the 4 days was spent doing Digerati. My ATI HD5750 wouldn't recognise and then the Audigy ZS and a couple of other bits and bobs, all good now, fully updated with everything which is a first for me as I had never bought a copy of Windows in my life due to lack of funds!! :)

Happy chappy. Windows 7 is pretty awesome if I do say so myself. Thanks again.

Sounds good. But please do remember, if you are downloading copyrighted materials without paying due royalties, you are risking serious malware infestation, or worse! And, it is stealing.

Whats the point of arguing about uTorrent. Why not just use Bittorrent or Bitcomet. Best torrent systems in my view!

Also I would check for malware because they can easily get around when dealing with torrents.

So it's just torrents? As suggested, try a different client. Be aware that some ISPs can detect the use of torrents, and will throttle the speed accordingly.

I'm getting ~4Mb/sec on a wired Ethernet connection. It mainly depends on how far we are from the exchange (the wire path, not as the crow flies). I don't use wireless, even though my router has the capability. I would expect something ~95% of the maximum wired speed.

Others who use a wireless connection in the UK (and elsewhere) will be able to give you a better answer. I'm sure that you will interested to see what your fellow Australians say on this matter.

Digerati,
I gladly paid for albums (over 180) and DVDs (~90) when I was healthy enough to work.
The digital format enables movie companies to get paid several times for the same product (theaters, ppv, payTV, dvd sales, rentals, and finally cable television). The same digital format enables consumers with a computer to avoid these repeated costs. In what other industry can a producer get paid so often for the same product?
So who is cheating who???
