Using IE8 built in win7 HP 32 bit (and 4GB), I have to wait about 10-12 seconds after hitting next to even the first tab in order to open a new (second or more) tab. The page which eventually comes up is always the one with last tabs recently closed and accelerators, and shortcut for inprivate browse etc..

How could I fix this, it's annoying and for sure not regular behavior (esp comparing to other browsers)..thanx for sharing ideas!

Not sure if I understood the question. But I did have a problem with slow opening of new tabs for a long time (7 months) on a Vista machine which had been in use for 2 years prior to installing IE8. Tabs worked fine in IE7 but from right after the IE8 install until recently the tab opening was very slow. The problem fixed itself last month, I believe, perhaps after the April Windows Updates.

yes exactly same thing with me, you got it perfectly. I have always made all available updates, don't see any improvement of IE8 on my system.
Running IE8 in safe mode just cuts down to about 6-7 secs..

What you could do is try and see if there any weird add ons that are making IE8 slower.

Go to:
Tools -> Manage Add-Ons

See if there is something there.

I will, however as I wrote above, I tried in safe mode (which means no add-ons)..and tabbing is still not responsive at all..

Slow opening of pages IE8 Windows 7

Originally I had no problem but I had to create a second user ID and there was a painfully slow load of pages. Tried all the stuff listed on web-(manage add-ons, remove Java, etc,), none of that did anything. I reset the browser, no improvement. I checked some of my wiped folders on the old ID and found that:

C:\Users\(your windows login ID)\appdata\local\microsoft\windows\history.ie5\index.dat

was not being wiped in my new ID.

wiping it seemed to resolve the problem
