Solved Excel 2013 very slow to open worksheets.

I have excel 2013 and been having issues when opening worksheets. The worksheets are VERY slow to open (sometimes about 1 minute) and all the while I am getting the "not responding" notification. My M/S Word worksheets seem to open very quickly still. I did install 16gb RAM 2 weeks ago but I don't think the issue could be related, could it? The Excel program itself opens quickly but the worksheets is what is hanging up. I have tried the "repair" option and still no change. I did have a password on these worksheets but I have since removed it. I do not know if that has anything to do with it as I removed the pw when the issue was happening. I have windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. M/S home and student 2013.

Hi petey52, welcome to the Forum.

Your problem certainly could be the new RAM installation. Have you tried going back to the original RAM set up & seeing if that fixes it. Did you get professional advice on what RAM type & speed to use & whether it suits your motherboard & CPU.

I do think I have the correct memory stick. Corsair Tech picked them from the vendor list for my motherboard. However, what negative complications would result if I changed back to the original memory sticks (8gb) after having installed (16gb)?

If you have not made any other changes other than change the RAM, things should revert to what they were before you changed the RAM. Unless you have really big spreadsheets in Excel 8 GB of RAM should be adequate.

Having a larger RAM does not necessarily make the computer faster as there are a lot of other variables, such as the CPU, hard drive access time & the general quality of fitted components. For example, installing an SSD & reinstalling the operation system, will make a big difference if you have been using a hard disc drive.

I think I found out what the problem was!!!! I had my excel workbook on my desktop for several months without having any problems with them loading or getting the "not responding" thing. In the last 2 weeks I "cleaned" up my desktop and consolidated the excel workbooks into a folder and named that folder "Excel Data", and it was on my desktop. That is when I started getting the buggy issues and slow to open thing. I discovered that if I opened the folder and dragged and dropped (NOT COPY and PASTE) the worksheet onto the desktop, that it would open cleanly and quickly. If I copied and pasted the file to the desktop but left a copy of that file inside the folder, it would still be buggy. Bottom line is: If I remove the worksheet that I want to work on completely from the folder on place it on the desktop, everything is OK. Placing it in a folder was the issue. Maybe because Excel couldn't find it with the folder in the path? Has anyone ever heard of this before? I am going to give it some time to verify that the problem is solved.

Working out the actual route a file uses to access a program can be very difficult, as there is a lot longer route than what we actually see when looking at the file data.

If you have just one file or a folder of files in your Document Library, the best way to set up access to that from the Desktop is to Right Click the mouse on the file or folder in question & select Send To with the Desktop (create shortcut) option. This provides direct access & is devoid of any unnecessary detours, which slow down access time.
