Very strange problem.

Hi,


System:- windows 7 pro x 64, 16g memory, fully updated.
Scannow shows no errors.
A boot repair comes up with an unknown error with no details and no solution!


Have you ever come across this problem before :-

CPU at 0%, programs will run in the task manager but not display on the screen.

The task manager services tab shows no services running and appears slightly corrupted!

Opening the event manager causes it to attempt to load the msc module but just sits at the
hour glass.

Shutting down the pc shows an unnamed and invisible process hanging on which has to be
forced to stop.

Then the pc hangs at the shutdown screen and has to be switched off and restarted.

Then even when the pc is not being used after some time the whole problem starts
again......aagh.:shock:

Thanks any advice would be most useful.

I have malwarebytes, paid for version, Avast premier always running so although I haven't run any scans lately I don't see how any virus's could get through.

Most likely not, I didn't see anything in your system specs that's why I inquired.
I wonder what System Update Readiness Tool has to say?
Please run it and post CheckSUR.log. Log is temporary at C:\Windows\Logs\CBS
Have you tried running chkdsk to scan your disk for errors?

Thanks for the reply.


I have managed to use a backup to get windows runingfor now but have yet to perform an avast program upate!


I have installed the microsoftupdates and so far everything is OK.


The backup is from a couple of months ago and has been virus scanned.


Once avast is updated and if the pc seems fine I will resorethe faulty windows copy and see whatI can find on that.


The problem is that it has the error after about 45 minutes so I may need to perform a repair install first, it is not an OEM copy.


Happily I have a 3 HD backup system so that makes me pretty secure!


I am going to also load a backup from about 2 weeks ago and see if that works, all this restoring takes time with the updates that need putting on.


I should also have restore points I can use but testing all the possible options will take days.

Maybe one of your drivers has become corrupted.

Can you get into "Safe Mode"?

If yes, does your machine work properly?

I would think so but I haven't tried that yet.


As a reboot fixes the problem for a short while I would assume so but I will have to test it.

Being that you receive conflicting reports from sfc /scannow I would run SURT tool and post logs, per post #4.If you have some files, or registry entry issues it will list what it fixed and what is missing/not repaired/replaced.
It certainly would hurt anything if you run it. sfc /scannow doesn't report problems if there are none!

Thanks for reply.


The situation has moved on a bit.


I have used a backup which worked fine until I had to update the Avast security program then the problem returned.


Currently I am restoring to just before the Avast update to see what will happen if I do not update Avast, prior to the update the pc was running fine.


I have Avast on another W7 pc and the update did not cause any prolems on that one.



If it runs fine without the update I still have another hd with the problem on it so I can use that to do some debugging and hopefully find what is causing it


All this restoring and backing up is taking hours so I get back to you when I have more info.

Avast updates can, sometimes, cause registry issues, which sfc /scannow cannot correct/repair.
SURT will identify them, and they are most likely the same ones I and others have had issues with. I have a text file to process with SFCFix.exe or FRST to remove the corrupt/invalid registry entries.

Yes, I have had problems with Avast in the past.


I have just restored to before the Avast update so I'll have to see what happens now.
