VGA to USB adapter will not install and work properly

Hi,

I will say up front that I am NOT very tech-savvy. That being said, I bought a VGA to USB adapter to hook up a second monitor on my office computer. When I plug the VGA adapter into the computer and it starts installing drivers, I get a message saying "Device driver software was not successfully installed" and there is a Failed beside USB Video Device. Windows Update is on and the computer searches for drivers, but says that the most current driver is already installed. Also when I go to Control Panel/Devices and Printers, the VGA adapter/monitor is showing as a USB composite device (webcam icon) instead of a monitor...and in Device Manager it comes up under Imaging Devices rather than Monitors. You could try finding, then installing, the driver for this device. Did a disk come with it? If not, then you can try two different things, to see if one of them gets you the driver:
1. Do a Windows update. If it finds a driver for this device, install only that one driver, then reboot.

2. Use the VEN-DEV method.
Look in Device Manager, to see if you can find a device with a yellow triangle next to it.
See if one of these "triangle" listings is for this device. If it is, then right click on it and look at the properties.
Dig around in there till you see something like this: \VEN_8086&DEV_1C22&SUBSYS_05111028&REV_05.
In this example, the "VEN" (vendor) number is 8086, and the "DEV" (device) number is 1C22.
Now go to www.pcidatabase.com and do a Device search on the DEV number. It will return some listings. Click on the hyperlink on any line which has a match on the VEN and the DEV number. By searching through these, you should be able to find the driver for this device.

If none of that works, contact the company you bought the device from. Perhaps they will have an idea.

I did not get a disc with the adapter as the description said I wouldn't need one. I tried the VEN-DEV method and found USB\VID_1D5C&PID_2000&REV_0200&MI_00 which helped me figure out that this is a Fresco Logic adapter. I tried downloading that driver, but the computer says I already have the most current version installed.

Another odd thing....if I have the adapter plugged in when I restart, Windows will not start until I unplug it.

My guess would be that the manufacturer has used some variant on the standard USB rules, so this isn't working exactly like it's supposed to.

Something you could try:
1. Unplug the adapter.
2. Go into Device Manager. Right-click on the item at the top of the list in the right panel, and choose Show Hidden Devices (or however it is worded).
3. If there are any USB listings with a yellow triangle or exclamation point by them, right-click on them and choose Uninstall. Same for any video devices.
4. Reboot.

Once you are logged back into Windows, plug in the adapter and try again.

The idea here is that there may be an orphaned listing in Device Manager which is somehow causing an issue for this device.

I did find 2 devices with the same error, a keyboard and a mouse (not hooked to my computer). I uninstalled those, but they reappeared after I restarted and it still doesn't work. I'll try reaching out to the company to see if they can help. I appreciate your suggestions!

I bought some memory on Ebay. However, when I installed it in the computer, the computer wouldn't work. I contacted the vendor; he asked me, "Is the CPU Intel or AMD?" I told him it was Intel. He told me that the memory I bought was only for computers with AMD processors. Sure enough, I reread the product info posted on Ebay, and it said that you needed to have an AMD processor to use that memory! I replaced it with memory which would work with Intel, and the replacement memory worked with no problem in that computer.

In other words, you might solve this by reaching out to the company.
