Video Codecs

I've noticed that some video files I play don't have sound when playing through Windows Media Player, and some do. Even though they appear to be the exact same file, .avi, with all the same settings.

Just wondering if anyone had a similar issue to this, and if they had found a fix or the proper codecs to download.

Thanks
Sean

I've tried others like the DivX player, and QuickTime Player. It's just that Windows Media Player is the default player, and I would like to get the sound working in it.

Certainly, I can understand that.

What codecs are you using? Any third-party packs? If so, set it so that they do not decode AVI files. Windows can take care of AVIs instead.

I haven't installed any additional codecs. What I was hoping is that there was some I could install to fix this. I remember in Vista I had the same issue, and I read that DivX had some codecs. I tried that, and it worked. I do not have DivX on this PC now, but when I did, it still did not work.

Edit: Thanks Arc, I will take a look at it.

Edit: Those are Vista codecs, I tried installing them anyway, and it said to download the W7 codecs from shark007.net. I'll try those.

Youll need Hali Splitter for MKV, Win 7 will not play them out of the box.
but you should have no issue at all for AVIs or MP4 ..

If going with a codec pack I would highly recommend Shark007 codecs.
His releases work perfect under 7, and even has the abilty built in to assign ffdshow as the prefered decoder.

I tried many and finally settled with CCCP powered with Zoom player. Never used WMP.

CCCP - Combined Community Codec Pack

There are many other tools to find out what is the audio codec used for an AVI file and to check whether ur computer is having the required codec to decode them. Whenever I have any video or audio problems, I directly goto videohelp and get assistance.

Uaually windows 7 doesnt need a codec to play a media file like .avi or .mkv. still, if needed, this codec package is good
Download Vista Codec Package 5.5.1 - With this package installed, you shouldn't need to install any other codec or filter - Softpedia
I used it . Not a bad choice at all. I think it will be able to fix that issue.

Not helpful, downloaded and installed the Codec you recommended here and Shark box pops up and says this codec is only for XP or Vista and recommended a different codec designed for Windows 7. Since we are only a Windows 7 forum, I assume you tried this and didn't get the same message. I also previously downloaded Shark's codec for Windows 7 and after doing so still had the same issue of Windows Media Player not streaming a .wmv video that is posted on a website. Got any suggestions? Thanks.

WMV is a native Windows video format and
The Shark007 codecs have nothing to do with decoding/streaming it.

Friends have posted videos from the UK which are in .wmv format. IE tries to play by opening a window but then quit. Basically had the same problem in Google Chrome. I downloaded Sharks codec and saw no difference. Shark responded to a previous post that .wmv is a native codec to WMP and his codec has nothing to do with changing that. I then downloaded the VLC and it got me a little closer. VLC media player downloaded the .wmv file and played video without sound. That's where I am now. I am on a new Acer laptop with I3 m330 processor, Windows 7, x64 machine. Any suggestions anyone?

You probably need this ANTIQUE AUDIO CODEC from microsoft.
This codec is over 15 years old and redundant today.

The people encoding the wmv's should be informed that not many people are using Windows 95 anymore. WMA replaced this acelp audio an entire generation ago.

Shark 007. Thanks for the help.

you're welcome.

I have another question concerning this codec app which you supplied. It only gives option to "run" or "save" if I am in Internet Explorer. When I clicked the same link in Google Chrome and in Safari, it downloaded but renamed with a different extension - not the "exe". The computer then doesn't know what to do when I click to run the application from the Downloads folder. Do you know if I manually rename to the original "*.exe" should it run?

I simply attached the file, acelp_net.exe to the post. I have no idea how this site, your web browser, or what ever else is invloved, is handling the download of the file.
