You are absolutely true, John ! Actually software choice varies from person to person . But still an experienced person's choice is worthy to follow . I use convert x to dvd , it is easy to use; but the encoding is not always good enough .

I want to give Corel a try. I use another app by Corel, CorelDraw ! That's a nice program

I would not recommend trying the X3 version of Corel Video Studio as there was a major problem with the authoring module.It was so bad that Corel has now issued an different stand alone authoring program free to all purchasers of the v3 version. Unfortunately this module does not come with the trial version of the x3 program so you can't evaluate it first. If you look at this thread within the Corel Forum it will explain all.

In any case you don't really need this version unless you are talking high definition. I can't find where you can download a trial version of the x2 version, sorry!

If I play the file through Quicktime, I can lower the bass and tremble, it makes the movie semi watchable. But if I save it as a mov, I can't burn it to dvd. Oh, well.

You say you are saving it to a MOV. You can't just save a video file to another format without rendering it to that format with a video converter. Given that you have converted it why go for a MOV format. If you want to burn it to a DVD then the native format will be MPEG 2. This will enable you to burn it to a DVD without any loss of quality. With the right DVD authoring software you will have the choice to "Not re-render compliant mpeg files" so avoiding any loss.

I don't use Quicktime, it's one of my pet hates but do you get the option to save to any other format, if so which ones as I can't see any advantage in saving to a MOV file!

Had another thought. How about using Windows movie maker to cut, say a 4 minute clip from your video, putting it up on a server, sending me a PM with the URL and I will download and see what I can do with it with my range of video and audio software. If I can find the answer then I will just post my workflow!

In WMM, go to "Clip" and "Split". Then you publish the piece you want to retain. In WLMM, you have to go to "Edit".

Virtualdub is one of the most complete and versatile video editing programs that i have ever used. What a stupid thing to say.

You guys made me curious about Videodub. Could someone give a short summary why one would want to use it rather than e.g. WMM or WLMM. I use those or Machete which is a lossless editor that is extremely fast. One thing I noticed about Videodub is that it seems to support only a few codecs - but maybe I read that wrong. And it definitely does not have malware. The largest German computer mag Chip distributes it - and those guys check all programs out thoroughly before they release them.

Just to add my two pennyworth to the ongoing discussion about Virtual Hub. The OP seems to be convinced that it carries something malicious so he is never going to be confident using it. In the UK we a have a thing called "S***s" law which means that if he did use it malware or spyware would undoubtedly descend upon him from a great height so it is probably best if he steers clear of it! (IMHO, that is)

Well I can't help there, I'm afraid. It hardly seems worth while to post a DVD to you from the UK. All I can do is to say that if you can find a blank DVD (they cost less that 30 cents in the US I believe) I'm prepared to quarantee that there is no hissing in the background of the video. The speech is remarkably clear given that this was an original old film, converted to a VHS tape and then captured to a digital format, then rendered to a DVD.
Again I would ask, are you happy for me to quote my findings here on the open Forum?
