I have a purpose built media center pc that i have been using for about a year with no problems. All of a sudden some of my video files are taking over a minute to open and start playing. This has never been a problem before. I even reloaded the OS (windows 7 ultimate 32 bit) and it still does it. Any ideas? The computer is pretty fast i7920 with 6gb ram. nod 32 as antivirus and shark007 codec pack. The only thing i can think of at this point is the problem is caused by an update witch i re-installed after the OS install. Any help would be much appreciated.

Uninstall nod32, reboot, and test.
If that fixes it, use AVAST instead.

have you tried temporarily disabling your av to see if that's the problem?

some av's like to scan the whole file before playing, and if it's a big multi-gigabyte file, that can take some time.

what av are you using now?

Nod32 is a good AV program. Would be strange if that is the culprit. I would look at the codec. What is the filetype we are talking about?

mostly .mkv seems to be the culprit. Haven't really tested much else. avi seems ok

Make a test. Convert one of the ,mkv files to .avi or .wmv and see whether the problem persisits. If that fixes the problem, you may want to ask Shark since you use his .mkv codec (I assume).

strictly speaking, mkv isn't a codec - it's a container.

it's the h.264, divx (or whatever) that's the codec...and then it's all wrapped up in a container.

but maybe i'm confusing the thread - if so, i'll shut up.

You are right Mickey (did I spell that right -LOL). I use a very loose language when it comes to Codecs. Shark already hit me over the head for that.

2 things to try...
update your graphics drivers from the chipset manufacturer
AND/OR
update the codecs.

Uninstall the current codecs from the Help TAB of the Settings Application
Get and install the latest release from MajorGeeks

test your files

If things work as they should, leave it alone
If something is not right, press [Reset All], test again
still not right? try using the [x] SUGGESTED settings
