I have some 2 part .mkv movies that I want to join, but when I attempt to use Mkvmerge for this, it always pops a window as shown in screenshot, that the track parameters don't match and fails. I have the same problem with The Ten Commandments.

After thinking about this for a while, I have come to suspect that the reason for the problem in both cases, is that the second part has a somewhat lengthy Intre' Acte section that is comprised of mostly all audio, along with a still screen, and that Mkvmerge can't match these up.

If that is the case, is there a way to merge these parts without cutting off the audio section?

Are you trying to have them burned to a DVD ?

No, I have no interest in that, only to merge the parts, so that they will display properly as a single movie in the players that I use.

How about converting them to another format beforehand, their are a few free tools that can do it but never used any so I can't advise.

I suppose that might work, but from what I have been told, re-encoding them will cause them to lose quality, therefore I want to leave them as they are...except being merged.

Yea, you dont want to recode them unless theres no other possible way.
A recode of a recode will certainly start to suffer in quality.

Both clips should be pretty close to the same. Meaning same Audio/Video codec and very close to same bitrates. Im assuming that they are?

1 other thing you may try if all else fails.
De-Mux the files into a Raw Audio/Video stream, and remux them into another container. Perhaps a MP4.
Then try again.
There will be no recoding done do this.

I'm doing it exactly as in the tutorial, except that I don't understand the note about the Haali Splitter being needed. Why is a splitter required to do joining? I guess that I have it installed, because the search finds it in both of the folders for K-Lite and Format Factory's filters. Does it need to be installed otherwise?

Its used for splitting the Matroska streams when working with/playing them.

The joiner still has to split the Audio/Video stream, join them, then re-mux into the MKV container.
So the splitter is needed during that process. If you have it already, there should be no issue.


As far as your 2 files you wish to merge, can you double check the resolution on each?
If Im not mistaken, it need to be the exact same.

Audio and Video should be the same codec as well, and very close to same bitrate. There is some wiggle room on the Bitrates here though.

Okay, but that is only half of the question...do I need to install it again, even though it is part of the programs that I mentioned?

You could make copys of the files, that way you will still have the originals.

Sorry, Im unfamiliar with that program.

But if its included with Klite and/or Format Factory, it should be installed already.

Do you get the little Halli Icon in your task bar when you play a MKV with WMP for example?

K-Lite may have a configuration tool for the spliiter so you can set it to be the default for MKV.

I have never noticed an icon such as that, but then I never use WMP to play anything.

Yea, being as you have Klite, I would assume its already configured and working.
It a issue with one of the streams not matching up when together. Just need to pinpoint it.

Easier said than done. Do you think that the fact that the actual movies are separated by the Entre' Acte interlude is causing the problem?

I'm not sure that I understand what you mean? Both parts were encoded from factory DVD sets, so I think that they would both have the same resolution.

Theroetically Yes.
But if the encoder was set to be automatic, it may have encoded the 1st one at say ...

720x480

And the second one it may have decided to crop a bit, and encoded at say 720x440 .. or something along that line.

That would likely cause a problem when joining them.

It appears that you may be right. I entered both parts in the converter portion of DVDFab 8, and the resolution of the first part is 720x270, and the second part is 720x268. There are also some differences in bit/pixels and aspect ratio. So what do I need to do...start over from scratch?
