Videos from iPhone XS won't transfer to desktop, seems its HEVC codec

I couldn't be more frustrated with this situation.


I'm using the DJI Go mobile app and gimbal to record video with my iPhone XS.


The DJI Go app saves the files in a special folder separate from my normal photos & video roll so that I have to manually download to my iPhone storage.


I've been trying transfer these videos now from my iphone to my windows 7 desktop and I'm just having all kinds of problems.


First most of the videos won't even transfer as I get an error during download that I've taken a screen shot of saying "A device attached to the system is not functioning"


Yet it functions just fine for everything other than downloading these videos.


As you can see in the screen shot the videos populate just fine in windows explorer when my iphone is attached.


However when I try to drag and drop them to my desktop, windows media player apparently can't read .mov files, nor can my video editor Filmora and requires me to download an HEVC codec. But when I try to download it it gives me an error saying that it's only for windows 10.


I have no idea what to even do at this point as everything I try doesn't work. I've also attached another error screen shot.

You need to install quicktime to install the codec Download QuickTime 7.7.9 for Windows

Hmm I have apple quicktime installed and just updated it earlier.


Is this a different version of it that works with windows 7?


Yeah I just verified my version of Quicktime and it is 7.7.9


Even Quicktime won't play the video aspects of these files.



So now I'm really confused.


Any ideas?

I use Filmora video editor and version 8 will populate these videos.


Their newer 9.0 version doesn't populate these videos and is requiring the HEVC codec.

I'm not sure why you need a codec just to copy the files but only to play. I would try DivX. HEVC/H.265 Definition - DivX Video Software

Ok that programs works great for this problem.


But there is no video thumbnail as the icons, instead it just has the DIVX logo as the thumbnail and I have to open each file to figure out what it is - is there any way to fix this?


Filmora 9 is still requiring a separate HEVC codec, but I've posted on their forums to hopefully get some help, but their forums aren't the greatest. I am able to use Filmora 8 to make my videos for now.

Did installing DivX fix your issue?

It did for my computer itself, yes. Still having the HEVC codec issue with the video editing software Filmora 9. The only HEVC file it seems to want to download is for win10:

Hmm that walk-thru didn't help see thumbnails.


What's even weirder is some of these HEVC files will have a thumbnail, but most wont.


Any idea on what else I can try to get these thumbnails to populate instead of the DIVX player icon?

The HEVC format is fairly new so you need to install a CODEC for it as a separate install on older Operating systems ...

Hmm. so I downloaded that codec pack and now my thumbnail image is all glitchy, this doesn't go away with restart of the computer either.


Any ideas what's causing this?


Should I just delete this new pack and go back to the DIVX thumbnails?


Also, I got an error message when installing this new codec pack and I chose yes to disable it - was that the right choice?


Also, still having issues with thumbnails populating the video previews.

One issue could be that Windows 7 itself cannot handle the newer formats, so you have to use add on packs.

Unfortunately unless you can find a single pack that covers all that you need there is always the chance that one pack will break another.

one thing to try - have you tried using VLC as your player, over the years I've used it it's never failed to run the files and show the correct thumbnails I know you are used to what you are using now but VLC does not require add-ons as all the format support is internal.

What I would suggest is that you uninstall the packs you have installed and install VLC and give it a try.

I am of course on Windows 10 and due to my involvement with stills photography run the paid version of FastPictureViewer which may assist me though it should not. I also run the Microsoft Codec pack Which does contain Video codecs so If VLC does not do the job you could try the Windows 7 version of the pack (working on the premise that MS know their File explorer better than most) but I would suggest that you only try one Codec Pack at a time

One oher free pack that has good reviews in the Windows7 Codec Pack which may be worth a try as the only pack installed

Ok so I downloaded VLC and it does seem to be the best solution.


But oddly, now there are certain images that have the VLC logo, while my "normal" pictures don't have this. Are these images perhaps attached to the videos in any way?

It seems that VLC is the default program now for pictures. The instructions here show you where to go to change file association in VLC. Just uncheck the picture formats. VLC HowTo/Make VLC the default player - VideoLAN Wiki

FYI it is the considered opinion that users leave file extensions enabled that way virus programmers can't disguise one of their files as something completely innocuous. If you have file extensions turned on that is harder for them to do. Windows 7 – How to display file extensions – IT Support Guides It also makes it easier for you to see which file is which and not have to depend upon icons or thumbnails. Personally I can't stand that windows hides file extensions and it is the one of the first things I change.

It was a decent idea back before Vista when Windows selected the entire name (including the extension) if a user where to go rename a file, that way users wouldn't accidentally remove or change the extension but starting with Vista Microsoft made it so that when a user goes to rename a file the extension isn't selected. I highly suggest that you turn extensions on.

Hmm, so I'm not seeing any image file options at all under VLC associations, let alone ones that are checked?


Here's the list, am I missing it some where?

I don't know what file types your files are because the extension is hidden however those checked are defaulting to VLC. Uncheck any that you don't want to open by default in VLC.
