I'm considering this TV:

Viewsonic VT2430 24" LCD HDTV - 1080p, 1920x1080, 1000:1 Native, 10000:1 Dynamic, 5ms, 16:9, VGA, HDMI at TigerDirect.com

And I just got off the phone with TD sales support, where they verified that the set does have HDMI input, despite the fact that the pictures only shows the VGA port. I intend to use this set for double duty has both a TV and as a monitor, which means that I would need to use a cable that I have with DVI on one end, and HDMI on the other.

When I tried to use this cable on my Acer monitor, I only got a black screen, and Acer support said that I had to use a straight DVI to DVI connector for it to work, but this set doesn't have a DVI connector, and VGA is not desirable.

When I questioned the rep about this, he said that I SHOULD be able to use the composite cable okay, but I really don't want the hassle of learning the hard way that it won't. Does anyone have any experience with this brand or model that would relate?

So your video card doesn't have HDMI? How are you going to get sound? Stereo? You may be best off getting an inexpensive vid card with HDMI and a regular HDMI cable if you want to keep it simple. Monoprice.com has inexpensive cables.

It is not necessary to have a HDMI connector on the video card to sent HDMI to the TV, this can be done via a DVI connection. In past discussions along these lines, I have been told that it is possible for sound to use the DVI cable, but whether this is right or wrong, it doesn't really matter, because I will probably use a pair of Creative T20 2.1 speakers, because most TV speakers don't have all that good of sound quality anyway. However, I came across a straight monitor that I'm considering, despite the fact that it doesn't have a tuner...I would have to use the computer for that purpose, as I now do on my other computer:

Asus 23" MS236H 23 inch WideScreen HDMI LCD Monitor~NEW - eBay (item 190370530925 end time Mar-05-10 13:49:59 PST)

Not only is it somewhat cheaper, but has better specs. Right now, I'm trying to figure how to mount it to a wall, rather than using the ring stand that it has. I have sent a couple of email to some venders about this, but it will probably be a while before they respond.

My confusion is the fact that the connectors face the rear, which means that it couldn't be flat to the wall, and though the specs says that it is wall mountable, it's not apparent in the picture that it has VESA mounting holes. It would be a shame not to be able to mount it like a picture, instead of having to use a mount that protrudes from the wall.

I haven't sen without teh VESA screwholes. Also, if you go to monoprice.com you can find 90 degree adapters, and adjustabel ones. I believe they are called port savers. I had to use one when mounting one with a flush mount. It came witha 90 degree power plug, but then the ports all faced the back..../shrug

The responses that I got from the venders all said that they didn't know about VESA, and referred me to Asus. I don't know if my attempt to do so was successful or not, because the only way that I found was intended for current owners, not for pre-sales questions. Curiously, my first try to submit it returned a server error, the second attempt said that the submission code was wrong, and the third said that it had already been submitted.

I found on the Asus website, info that it includes a HDMI-DVI cable, so it would seem obvious that my composite cable will work.

I found the adapters at monoprice that you mentioned, so that is two questions down...now to wait and see if Asus answers the last?

Thanks

It seems that I can't get a response on my question, even from Asus, either via email, or live chat. While on the Asus website, I found a FAQ that said that Asus considers 3-5 dead pixels to be acceptable, I wouldn't, especially on a brand new monitor. I found this monitor at a somewhat lower price on Ewiz, but when I tried to call them, the phone menu options did not include a means to ask technical questions, so I'm still hanging.
