I use Vipre 4.0 on several of my systems. there are many references to it on this site.
it's on par with any AV out there.

agreed.......its about time they start participating in tests like av comparitives....so their claims of having The 'Porsche' Of Antivirus can be verified... till then these magazine reviews are all there is.....pc mag/Neil Rubenking still offers a better than most run of mill kind reviews dished out by others.

Vipre is a good AV

good...decent...great depends on subjective notions....in a layered set up with a proper backup plan...with safe web habbits it can be excellent esp if it works on one's system

Yep I agree. Vipre is a good AV. However, if you install the premium version, the firewall is PITA.
It blocks many websites, many.

Agreed. I've always found his reviews to be balanced and in-depth, yet many people just slam them out of hand. I really don't get it especially when most other reviews are so "mickey mouse". I learn a lot from them even if I don't always completely agree with his conclusions.

I also wondered why he didn't review the premium version - guess I could ask him

viper and counterspy by sunbelt software are two of the best security programs out there. i have used counterspy for years. please do the research before commenting on a product.

I've never heard of this vendor, either. I just stick to Microsoft, since Windows is their product.

The reviewer at pcmag.com says a review of Vipre Premium is already underway. He didn't quote a release date, but it shouldn't take long since he said most of his first review already applied to Premium - it's just the firewall and web site filtering he needs to evaluate.

I, peronally use Vipre, though not the Premium version. Having used Norton, McAfee and many other AV programs, I can DEFINITELY attest to the LOW resource usage of Vipre. It really does allow my PC to run faster. The GUI is very easy to use and I have only had 1 false positive in the 4 months I have used it. The one False I reported was rectified about 2 weeks later in a definition update. The folks are GOOD.

This is just MY OPINION, and I could be wrong, but I like it!

as for counterspy and vipre they use the same engine, the same defs, and both hunt down viruses and spyware. their names are misleading

Depending on the circumstances (e.g. what file it was) 2 weeks is a very long time, in my opinion.

Malwarebytes rectified a false positive I had the same day/next day.

Great, thanks for the link. Unfortunately the added features in the Premium version didn't do as well as the more basic Vipre AV. Apparently the IPS and HIPS features are off by default, and if you turn them on they generate a lot of pop-ups (Ah, the good old days ) This won't be a problem for the more savvy, but many suites have moved to white and black listing, and behavior analysis to eliminate pop-ups and take users out of the loop. That's much better for the newbies.

Update: I gave this a try and quickly grew weary of the pop-ups and general micromanagement the HIPS and IPS require. If I were going to continue using it I would turn the firewall off and install a different one, such as PC Tools Firewall Plus.
