Virgin Media broadband drivers blocked

I acquired an Advent Roma 2001 laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium but I can't install the drivers on the CD for my Virgin Media broadband connection because I get a message saying "This OS is not supported, you must update to ME or XP. The Virgin Media helpline led me to believe that it was the computer at fault, not the disc, but I wonder if anyone else has had this problem and if they've been able to solve the problem.
Thank you for taking the trouble to read this, any help would be much appreciated.
