virtual clone drive not working, "this application cannot start as it"

when i try to mount an iso i get the following error message: this application cannot start as it cannot create the files needed. There may not be enough free disk space.

i have free disk space so that can't be an issue. any ideas?

Hi there
are you trying to mount an ISO IN a virtual machine or on the HOST.

If it's a Virtual Machine you can in the Virtual Machine's settings define a DVD drive to be an .ISO file located anywhere on your HOST. You don't need Virtual clone drive or any software for this.
When you power on the VM the .ISO file will be allocated to a DVD drive (Virtual).

If you need more than one then just add another DVD drive to your Virtual machine's configuration.

With VMware if you can access Host drives as well (easy enough via simple networking -- NAT for example) then you can dynamically detach and attach (unassign / assign) different .ISO files without needing to power on the VM each time. I'm sure VBOX also has similar features for assigning / unassigning .ISO files too.

You only need things like Virtual clone drive if you want to mount these on the HOST computer as a virtual drive.

(This section deals with Virtual Machines -- now if you have problems running Virtual Clone drive on your HOST machine or are not using Virtual machines perhaps you should ask your query again in the Software section. The name Virtual Clone drive is a bit unfortunate as it confuses people with Virtual Machines which are a totally different topic.)

I think Reykjavik - sorry, jimbo45 - is correct and I am assuming that you are talking of the Virtual CloneDrive in a non-virtual machine problem.

The first question I would ask is "Wherefrom did you download the Virtual CloneDrive?"

One possiblity is that your antivirus program is not permitting it to run and is responsible for that error message.

Well, that can be a real virus infliction that came with a virus-laden download or a virus from some other source. The solution to try: get rid of that program and get rid of the virus.

If your download is from a reputed site like SlySoft Virtual CloneDrive - always download from the software author's website to the extent possible - , then I will reframe the question " What anti-virus program do you have on your machine?"

The solution to try is: disable your antivirus program and check. If confirmed that it is stopping the VCD run, add Virtual CloneDrive to the exceptions list in your Anti-Virus program as a permanent fix - if that is possible.

Or

get rid of the antivirus program and go with Microsoft Security Essentials. ( I have Virtual CloneDrive and MSE.)

Note: I have clearly told that this is one possibility. There may be other reasons that I may not know still.

im currently using virtual clone drive, downloaded from slysoft's main website. im also using micrsoft security essentials. the iso i was mounting was working for a while, then i installed adobe acrobat XI. after using both adobe and VCD for a while, VCD stopped working and gave me the message shown above.

i deleted adobe, did a system restore and was able to mount the iso using VCD. i installed adobe again, and the problem came back. so i uninstalled adobe and did another system restore. right now im using a different version of adobe and i haven't had any iso mounting problems yet.

how could adobe be causing this problem, if it is indeed the cause? i have a 64ssd as my main hard drive, im not sure if that is the reason for the OS saying there is a shortage of space, since i have about 20gb free.

If you are sure that new version Adobe Acrobat Creator 11 is causing that problem (and with an earlier version all is OK), then I would suggest that you report this as a bug to Adobe so that they can look into it rather than breaking one's head as to why it should happen. It is their job to find out and rectify it.
