Well I successfully created a 100GB VHD and successfully detached it. I thought virtual meant not real but apparently all this do was pull 100GB from my C drive and created another drive (k). As far as I'm concerned this is no better than partitioning the hard drive and assigning it a drive letter. Or did I just majorly miss what virtual meant in a PC environment. I was really disappointed. I would be better off just adding another physical drive to my system.

Purpose of the virtual drive was to see how complicated setting up was going to be and it was strictly for storage. I didn't realize that it took the space from what I already had on my system. I would be better off just installing another physical drive into my system. I don't see an advantage to a virtual drive, it's no different than partitioning an existing drive. Either way, virtual and partitioning, you end up with same result.

I stand corrected as to the advantage of virtual drive. With a virtual drive you can install an ISO copy of an OS (of your choice) and use it to dual boot and run that OS from with in a window on the desktop. There is no need to restart/reboot system, then choose what OS you want to use....and back and forth. This has a real advantage.

This is why I ask and was curious as to what you needed it for.

Dual boot usually refers to, when booting a PC you have an option of which OS to choose.

This is different from running a OS while inside of Windows. For this option, which is recommended first when experimenting with other OS systems you can run virtualization programs like VMWare, VirtualBox, or Microsoft Virtual PC.

Dual boot usually means during the boot up process choosing an OS, not booting into Windows and then launching an OS, like Linux.

If those are your plans, I would recommend VMWare Player.

Or virtualbox...
